Okay, so i just finished assembling the Athearn Genesis SD70M unit painted in the EMD Demo Paint Scheme. Now i want to super detail it, which is something ive never done to a locomotive before. So, what are some detail parts some of you guys would suggest i add onto this unit to super detail it? I want it to look like the proto unit (#7001) but i dont have the slightest clue as to what parts i should get to add onto this unit, i dont know what the specific details are called LOL.

I know i need MU Hoses, so i was going to get a pack of those and add them onto the front and rear of the unit, but what else? What type of antenna? I dont like the one that came with the unit from Athearn, and would like to replace it, but dont know what to use. After the details are added on, i will be weathering the unit, making an attempt to match the proto unit lol

Im also not sure what the pre-drilled holes on the front and rear of the unit are for? Anyone know? I dont have any parts that would go into these holes left from the parts supplied in the box....

Suggestions of parts and who makes them in HO would be greatly appreciated. Here are some pictures of the unit i just finished, as well as a couple links to the proto unit.

EMDX #7001 is now CSX #4676:

I will not be repainting this unit, instead modeling it before it was sold off to CSX....

Any help in the detail department will be greatly appreciated!! Thanks in advance,
It looks like you have three holes in each pilot. The top two are for the coupler lift bar. The lower one in the square recess is for the single "hose" pictured on the prototype. I think that may be the mu plug for electrical hook up, but I can't make out the detail well enough in the pictures to be sure. Does your model have lift rings? It looks like it might, but that part of the pics are a bit out of focus. There is a lot of detail under the walk ways, electrical cables, etc. The thing to be careful of if you are going to run the locomotive is that if you super detail under the walkways, you may restrict truck movement. I don't think your model has windshield wipers. All of your air filters and grilles are painted body color. The prototype pics show them either painted dark gray-black or else weathered to that color. You also need roof shots of both the prototype and the model. I don't think a roof shot of the prototype in demonstrator colors is necessary if you can't find one, but a prototype pic of any locomotive of that model in service may also show detail. I also just noticed, the chain blocking the pass over on both pilots is not painted on the prototype. I suspect it is galvanized. Paint would chip off on a chain in use regularly, so they probably galvanize it for corrosion resistance.
Josh, the 3 holes in the pilots would seem to be for "MU air" hose fittings. The one in the recess is the "train-line" air (brake) hose; the others are probably to attach a cast detail simulating the MU pipe fittings/air hoses for the main reservoir, and (2)independent (engine) brake hoses. If you are going to add cut levers, check prototype photos for mounting and formation detail. BTW, if you model the MU hoses connected, they need only be mated on one side - the redundancy is for convenience in making/breaking the coupling when necessary. Another thing noted is the side handrails...they are black, but from about the last stanchion to the end near the bottom step, this should be 'White" - think you can make it out on the proto-photo - as a SAFETY feature. I must say, that is one beautiful loco (for a Diseasel) Bob C.
Josh I wish I had a clue , I'm more into the rs1's and steam engines so can't really help but I did just want to say you did a super job on the paint.
Josh. you might want to try the Details West web site. They make details kits for the SD70 and SD75. The kits come with good instruction and plenty of detail parts to make your locomotive look good. More in fo can be found here: http://www.detailswest.com/sd70_info.htm and this is their home page: http://www.detailswest.com/

Details West makes a Super detailing kit for the Athearn SD70M(DS-296, BNSFBig GrinS-297, UPBig GrinS-299).
I would also repalce the molded on lifting eyes with the wire ones made by Detail Associates(229-101101).
Lookin' good, Josh!! Thumbsup Thumbsup Thumbsup Thumbsup Thumbsup
I have pictures of these units outside the london plant when they were new. Do you want me to scan some pictures of them for you?
In fact here they are. Well the closest of them.

Guys, thank you all for the replies!!! Misngth

Trains, thanks for the pics, they will help me out alot!! Its nice to have good clean and clear pictures to work off of, thank you for taking the time to find and post them up for me Misngth

After looking over the DW and DA parts, here is what i came up with that i am going to get to super detail this EMD SD70M. I had a little help from Josh (Jbaakko) lol

235-296 - Detail Kit for Athearn Genesis -- For SP, ATSF, BNSF, EMD, IC & NS SD70, SD70M & SD75M Diesels
235-300 - Detail Kit for Athearn Genesis -- Auxilliary Details for SD70 - All Roads
235-301 - Ditch Light -- Late Style w/Lenses
235-266 - MU Cables - 3 Cluster, All Roads
235-302 - Air Hose -- Locomotive Drop Elbow Style
235-106 - Rotary Beacon - Roof Mount
229-2211 - Coupler Lift Bars - AAR type 1
331-6034 - MU & Brake Hose Set - Rubber (Air, Sand, and Signal Hoses)
331-6007 - Universal Antenna Dome - Octagon

I have 2 sets of MU cables on there, one from DW and one from Hi-Tech Details, the Hi-Tech ones are rubber, so i thought i would give them a shot and see how they work.

I also put together a list of parts to super detail all 3 of my BNSF Athearn Genesis SD75I's. Ill post some pics in a new thread when i get the parts in and i start adding them to this EMD unit Misngth
After looking at the pics above, i see there are 2 of these as well, so i am adding one of these to the list for this engine

235-236 - MU Cables - Double-Ended Receptacle & Two Receptacles
So,

After viewing the photos of both brand new off the line and after a while service, I see that there is no longer the MU Receptacle. Compare

BRAND NEW:
Refer to the pictures that Trains posted above

After a while in service:

Can anyone explain why they have been taken off? Whats the purpose of a MU Receptacle?
This i can help you with! There is a book at my hobby shop that deals with exclusively demonstrators, and has all the photos you need. i don't remember the name, but I'll be going down that way soon again.

In fact, before you get started, make sure you have PHOTOS and the right tools and materials. Don't get impatient, look for those roof shots to get the right antenna.

Its happened several times where i assumed a set of locomotives were the same and it turns out that they are totally different. For example, i was super detailing Conrail 6614, a GE C32-8 in Conrail's Ballast Express paint scheme. Only one unit was drastically different (6612 carried a "modern" dash-8 cab, not a dash-7 cab), but they all "looked" about the same, until it came time to place the decals. Every other C32-8 had their Conrail logos in a different spot, some of them had their logos more forward than back. This, in shore, created a terrible mess with my models and it took three decal sheets to get it right.

Another example is on one of my brass E44s, i put on conrail numbers in the wrong font. Lucky for me in both of these cases, they were just decals and they could be removed, and all I'd experience is irritation. If you go ahead and start drilling holes or gluing things down without KNOWING for SURE that your engine was set up in that way, you can end up with a Way off model. When it comes to demonstrator units, you REALLY can't afford to fudge anything, since they stand out.

I really do reccomend the detail kits, they are a great help for modeling particular engines. I bought the Details west kit for my Amtrak P42DC and NJ Transit U34CH models, the latter of which was my first super detail project. Those kits will probably come with windshield wipers and MU hoses (I'm surprised yours didn't, my old SD75M came with all those parts, and the new Genesis units all have these parts installed). when you do get the kits, check to see what parts you still need. If you don't recognize it or don't know the name, i can probably identify it for you.

On good thing to check though, is who has the better details. Sometime Details West can't hold a candle to Detail Associates, other times its the other way around. it pays to look through your Walthers Catalog. T Here are also literallly TONS of small detail part suppliers that work out of their own homes, and its always worth asking around.

one cool detail you might want to add to your list are see-thru steps. When painted right, they look REALLY good, and they are very easy to install. Cannon makes an AWESOME set that also includes the deck's safety tread. If you want just the steps, A-line's SD60M steps will probably work, since your unit only has 4 steps, not 5 like some of the others. Cannon & Company makes A LOT of the parts you will need, the company almost exclusively makes EMD parts (sucks for those of us with many GEs like myself, lol). I'd recommend looking around their stuff to.

These steps are A-line, and the Cannon comes with additional pieces, but you can agree that it helps my C32-8 look fancier.

also, if you don't already have a pinvise, drill bits, and good glues, you're going to want to research those to. There are SO many tools out there, never do anything the hard way until you look up other ways to do it! I've found in my travels that if something seems a little ridiculously difficult, that there is probably something out there that works better than what you're doing.
