More then likely..That eliminated at least 2 crews if each intermodal train was 6,000 feet as per the locations of the DPUs..
Thankfully that was just a test train.
I think it might work to run a train that long out through the desert where there are few grade crossings. I suspect that if a railroad tried to run something that long through cities, it would not be long before the cities would pass laws restricting train length unless the railroad spent the money to provide separation and eliminate all grade crossings within the city limits.
I don't even want to think about a derailment.
Can you imagine the husband rushing to get his wife to the hospital to deliver their first child and then get to the crossing as the gates come down.

I think it's a load of bull. All they are doing is adding unit trains together to get rid of crews. I knew one of the cost cutting guys at UP corporate, he'd do anything to save a buck.
That was a LONG train! I wouldn't mind getting stopped by one, but I can see how a lot of people would hate it

From the conductor's point of view... imagine a separated air hose 5 cars from the rear of the train. Maybe I picked a good time to get out of T&E service. LOL.
Well, I fail to see the practicality of the monster. But out here, we'd do just about anything to rid I-81 of it's heavy truck traffic! The trucks will ride your bumper just to get you to drive faster. And then one rig will try to pass two or three slowers ones, while other drivers are riding your bumper in hopes of getting you to pull in between the trucks, so they can rip by you at 20mph over the speed limit!! If you're driving over the speed limit, because you've got some truck pushing you along, guess who's going to get the ticket?? It ain't the big rigs, baby!! So a super train might not be such a bad idea!!
(all this from a guy who used to drive big rigs!)
