I wonder if motors out of bad hard drives would work as well?

Thanks...CD/DVD tray motors work well too but the hard drive motors are integrated into the disk, making them too difficult to modify.

Only thing useful from a bad hard drive is the powerful magnet
I really have become an advocate of the CD ROM motors...they have a flywheel like action, smooth response and should be able to handle DCC well should I ever go that route in the future. I've found that a 1/4 watt 1000ohm resistor helps keep the speed controllable but they are still a bit fast on the upper end of the throttle, your best control being in the lower half. My 0-4-0 has gone from 2-3 cars to pulling over 7 though I've added no weight to the loco itself.
