Some pretty exceptional scratchbuilding. The dust and grime makes me think that this model is over 20 years old, am I correct? I really enjoy each and every detail you've added to this locomotive.

It looks almost identical to the somewhat new Bachmann spectrum 0-6-0T: http://www.wholesaletrains.com/Detail.asp?ID=200411524

Good eye !! I'm glad you like it. Thanks .

Not 20 but about 12 or 15 . I was sitting around one night sorting through some" junk" I had collected over the years & came across the chassis for the 0-6-0 Mantua , I did a test run on the chassis & found it ran about 200 MPH!! It occured to me that perhaps an auxiallary transmission might make the little critter more docile. After building one it turned out the thing ran pretty nice , now what? I poked around in my Locomotive Cyclopedia & ran across the Cherry Valley so I built one.
I'm not sure about how close it is to a Spectrum but I have one of the new Mantua 0-6-0 tank engines & they are almost identical , a few very minor details are different . I bought the Mantua on e bay for next to nothing ( nine bucks still in it's box & looking brand new) after I got it, I found why I stole it so cheap--- the side rods one one side were gone!! I guess everybody else looked closer than I did , but I bought a junk old 0-6-0 & salvaged it. So now I'm back where I started with a junk 0-6-0 --- good thing I can't find my Locomotive Cyclopedia!! 357
That's exceptional craftsmanship, no matter what it was you started out with or what pieces might be (or have been) missing! My hat's off to you.
Dave, I have successfully done some modifications to brass locos, but still haven't scratchbuilt one.
It is good to see that someone still does that kind of modelwork. Very Nice!!! Thumbsup

Thanks . I enjoy scratch building a lot , of anything not just locos. I seldom build kits & if I do I never manage to build them the way the maker intended.
Most of my locos are in storage now but I have scratched 4 class C Climax Locos, a K4 Pacific using Mel ThornBurghs articles in the 1949 & 50 issues of MR , A USRA Mikado from Gordon Oderburgs ? series in MR in the late 8O'S , A close copy of a Galloping Goose . I have a WM Shay about 1/2 done & a Heisler the same way.
If I can find some pictures of some of them I'll post them if anyone is interested.

Now there's a name I haven't heard in many long years. It is interesting that you should mention his name, as it was that very name that came to mind when I first saw your work.
I still have a fading copy of the article he did on an O scale B&O C16a 0-4-0 switcher.

I believe the name was Odegard (sp?), I'll have to check on that. I should have that series on the shelf, I vaguely remember seeing it.

Fantastic Worship ! She looks pretty scruffy right now, but she will be a beauty when painted.

So when are you gonna paint them?

I don't really know --- I have always been kind of scared about painting brass , not sure how to get a goood job done --- I'm not really at home with an airbrush . The hobby shop told me an airbrush would do half my work for me ----so I bought TWO of em -- & all they do is SIT there --- Lazy buggers!!
Found it! The article was by Gordon Odegard, and ran in three parts in the Oct./Nov. 1982 MR, and the Jan. 83 MR.

You are right , Cheers I knew that , don't know why I wrote it wrong. Thanks for checking.

Ok Nachoman --- I guess you have thrown down the gauntlet --- so I made a resolution before the end of JAN--- feb--- March ---- thats it March. Goldth I Will get the loco painted !
I bought a Badger sand blaster yesterday to clean it up & prep it, I'll use baking soda, I think.
I'd guess regular floquil woud be the best fo it , not sure what shade or style of black would be the best for the basic paint. Primer? Gray or red oxide or what?
Bake or just air dry? Thats always been a problem for me with paint or glue.-- can't stand waiting for the stuff to dry---- Shoot look at my signature --- thats why I like solder -- NO drying time!! 35
