After I posted a topic the other day about re-icing a reefer,I got bit by the building bug again.I went to my LHS and got some dimentional lumber.
The platform is 60'x18' and is comprised of 8x8,2x10,2x8 and 2x6 lumber. The reefer that is at one end of the platform is a mechanical reefer that I cut down and it will be used to produce the block ice.
I still have more work to do yet,but I will post progress pictures.
Enjoy-
Bob

well done.. Thumbsup
That is extremely creative. You made good use of that scale lumber! I can't wait to see it on your layout.

Thanks for the replies and comments.I appreciate it.Actually the platform was not all that difficult to build. Once I figured out how I was going to build the upright supports it went pretty fast, only 3 nights to get it to how it looks in the picture.
I will post more pictures as soon as I clear out the area where it is going to be.

Cool modification and use of the plug door car on stilts!

Seems like I remember seeing a covered hopper on stilts to serve as a makeshift grain silo, and various boxcars and reefers sold to farmers to be used as storage. Also common is old tank cars used for chemical/water storage. In fact, I am thinking of using an old tank car tank as fuel oil storage on my layout.
I've also seen a PS2 LO used for sand storage at an engine service facility.

A few years ago I went quail hunting at a huge ranch in south Texas. In a couple remote spots, there were old steel boxcars used for storage. One was MP but I can't remember the other one.

Thanks again for the comments.I actually enjoy recycling stuff. Many times it saves me some money. For example the stilts were made from some scrap pipe sections that I glued together.
Kevin-if I may make a suggestion-if you are planning on using an old tank car for fuel storage you may want to think about mounting it on raised concrete fixtures made to fit the contour of the tank. This way if you are using it to re-fuel engines the fuel could then be gravity fed into the engines tank.
Gary, many years ago Model Railroad Craftsman used to have a feature called One Evening Projects. They ran one where they cut down a boxcar and mounted it on a heavy wooden platform.
I may still have it for anyone that may want to build this.I'll have to look.
