I saw a neat idea in the Gern thread about rail car exchange. This may give an impresion of a world beond our own, so if any one is intrested go ahead and post you reporting maks and a herald if you have one. As for me ill take a few roads and try to place them on my rails and in time ill list my little road so that who ever wants to place a car on thier rails can do so. Oh and if your line runs say just coal cars or passenger cars so on so on please post it also.
I have a tank car that is almost finished. Reporting marks are APC, and it's #17. It carries oil to line the insides of tank cars during the winter, when the layout is set Thumbsup . Coal hoppers would be sprayed with oil on the inside to help prevent problems with frozen coal during the unloading process. They need to be re-filled eventually Big Grin.

Still working on a herald, so you'll have to give me a bit on that one. Probably going to be a mountain with an apple at the top and say Apple Peak on it. I'll post it up soon enough.
Sounds like fun to me Harry.
My freelance road has italicized Ariel font. The NY map isn't always applied to rolling stock.

Here's my herald. [attachment=5515]

You can use either my ARR or SH&D reporting marks. I know the ARR is usually the Alaska RR. but we predate them by quite some time (we were chartered in 1835).
The SH&D stands for Susquehanna, Hudson, & Delaware. the pre-1900's name that is still used as a subsidiary CO.

We were never absorber into Conrail so modern equipment can also be lettered this way.
My avatar is my "stuck in 1936" Herald. I have better artwork, but I haven't yet gone through all the "Flat Work" portfolios of my 30+ years of design work yet since my recent move. I am still trying to deal with all the model railroad stuff that I unpacked with virtually no place to put it in this small house except stored under the layout (yet to be built) or on top of it, as part of the layout.

When I get to the artwork, I will make the Herald available and develop lettering diagrams for different cars.

Actually, I suppose that since I now have so many "friends" that model more modern eras than I, I should really develop the "updated" LS&W Herald for use on the more modern rolling stock!

I'll put that job on my list of things to do!
Okay. Attached is the herald for my Apple Peak RR & Coal Co. It's a tank car, numbered 17. It's lading is oil. It'd come to you guys empty, but come back to me full, so there ya go. Instant operations scheme.
I had a similar idea some time ago, except I have very limited ability to print and apply graphics, so mine was more of a "trade" deal, where I would letter a home road car of your choice (since I have the decals here) and trade you for a similar car that you lettered (since you have your own decals)

Until I have some more knowledge on making, printing, and applying graphics I will stick with trading. I have decals printed by Rail Graphics so I can letter up a car if anyone wants to trade, just PM me.

EDIT: My scheme is real easy if anyone wants to include the Potomac Line but doesn't have a car to trade. It is simply RR Roman lettering... POTOMAC LINE for boxcars, BALTIMORE AND POTOMAC for hoppers and gons. Flats and tanks just get reporting marks, no name. The reporting marks can be B&P, B&PRR, WBPL (Washington, Brandywine, and Point Lookout), SMRR (Southern Maryland RR), PB&W (Philadelphia, Baltimore, and Washington) or NC (Northern Central). Those are the reporting marks for the railroads that make up the Potomac Line in my fictional world, however ALL rolling stock, regardless of reporting marks, uses the above mentioned POTOMAC LINE for boxcars, and BALTIMORE AND POTOMAC on hoppers and gons.

Well Ralph i browsed some of you photos and soon one of your cars will be else where in model world, As for the others here im looking and listning to what you have Cheers
Cool Harry! Thumbsup
Ok ralph i got the car painted but need to know what type of decals you used for you hoppers covered that is. Epaw im intrested to know what cars your rails move under SH&D??
I made the decals for cars like the boxcar pictured above using Testor's decal paper. I've recently been experimenting with rubber stamps to print the Kings Port & Western lettering as noted in this thread: <!-- l --><a class="postlink-local" href="http://www.the-gauge.net/forum/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=3261">viewtopic.php?f=3&t=3261</a><!-- l -->

Ok while waiting and painting i came up with a name for a small fleet. The railroad is called EN&W Erie Northshore & Wesstern. Paint schem is oxide red and sun yellow for the EN&W lettering and for pin stripes.
The ANNA lines are primarily an anthracite and cement hauler, But See's the same type of traffic as any other class one in the North East. I model the mid 40's so all my cars are appropriate for that time.
Here is a car float of typical rolling stock being loaded In Catawissa PA. soon a tug will pick it up and forward it to Harisburg.[attachment=5564]First is a set of milk reefers, Pullman green with black ends and roofs, numbered in the 80,000 series.

[attachment=5563] Next is outside braced box #3312. She is painted mineral brown with Black ends and #rd in the 3,000. Fallowed by a Furniture box #in the 6,000 also with black ends.

[attachment=5562]Here are two of our converted cement cars. They started life as coal cars. This class of covered hoppers is #rd in the 800's.
[attachment=5567]
This is an example of some of our double sheathed boxes. The 3244 shows a paint job from a possible merger with the ERIE that never came to be, A few years latter they merged with the DL&W.Like most ARR boxes they are #rd in the 3,000's and have black ends.
The other is an oldie pressed into service due to the war time traffic serge. Cars like this never received the black ends and are allover boxcar red.

[attachment=5566] Now we have a set of Composite gons. most of these were never converted to steel after the war, and spent the rest of there lives as composites. Notice the different lettering schemes on the two cars. They are Pullman green and #rd in the 7,000.

[attachment=5565] The last to be loaded are a set of our most common boxes. #rd in the 3,000's. They also have the black ends.
I also have a group of coal cars in the works. They are in the 5,000 seiries.[attachment=5569]

There is also a set of coke cars in the shop. They will have the SH&D markings and #rd in the teens.[attachment=5568]

There are also some offset hoppers to be completed. They will be black and also have the SH&D reporting marks.
