I love it! 357
It's like they had a seaboard unit with a bad carbody, and then scavenged junkyards for a cab and hood doors to repair the damaged carbody. If it was just the cab, or one or two doors, it would be understandable. But my guess is this is some kind of serious wreck rebuild.
I'm wondering, is it a wreck rebuild or is it a situation where they had a unit that they were cannibalizing for parts when another unit got totaled, so they scrounged parts to fix this one where ever they could?
Railpictures.net Wrote:By 1995 the WC had assembled quite a group of experienced craftsmen at North Fond du Lac Diesel. Always on the look out for ways to upgrade the power on the system, WC had bought three ex CSX GP40's that had definitely seen better days. After quite a bit of shop time this former Seaboard System wreck was made whole and operational. In this photo it is ready to depart Shops for a full WC paint job at the WSOR in Horicon. It would be renumbered in the process and emerge as WC 3018. It is quite the kit bash incorporating parts from the original unit plus many parts from wrecked WC 3015 along with a BN cab and short hood via VMV.

So, yes, you guys guessed it pretty much correctly.
It doesn't look like it was totally a BN cab. I think I see some C&NW green in it also.On the roof, and along the frame. Also some on the dynamic brake blister too.
The wheels are turning...I have an old Athearn BB SD40-2 shell that I was using the drive on one of my F-45's. Which was wrecked.(fell off a friends lay-out)
Hmmmmmm.....
Recently, I posted fotoes of Western Pacific 3532, a GP40 that I built. It was the one WP unit that got yellow paint after the UP merger, but 'WESTERN PACIFIC' spelled out on the long hood, rather than UP lettering. It later went to WC by way of Gateway Western after lease turn back from UP and it was unfortunately, destroyed as WC 3015 in 1995 ina head on collision in Green Bay WI. It was the 2nd of 2 units, the other being a former WP GP40 itself, that collided with a yard job led by a WC SW1500. 3532 flipped over on its firemans side and was DESTROYED. The other two units were repaired and returned to service, but sadly, my favorite WP diesel was beyond hope. I was elated though to find this thread and see that at least the doors from 3532 were salvaged from the wreck to make another unit road worthy. Thanks guys, you made my day!
That looks like what they refer to as a shop mix or a real life scratchbuild. MartyG
