Started another project for my friend AG's High N' Xiety HO layout. This is Campbell's Abandoned House kit. Plans are for it to be part of an abandoned moonshine still tucked away somewhere in the Appalachian Mts. in NC.

I started by removing all wall panels and covering the backs with masking tape to add a little strength to them while I cut out all the windows and doors. I really don't like the "new" windows and doors on a 80 year old cabin, I'll see what I can do about that later in the project. I then stained everything including the stock wood for the framing in a similar solution that I did for the Woodshack Summer Challengehttp://www.the-gauge.net/forum/viewtopic...=37&t=2956. I did add a little more gray, rust and india ink, which sped up the process considerably. Looks like I will weather with a little more rust later.

Next step will be to take a wire brush and old xacto blades and scrape up the walls a bit to age it more......However, that will have to wait until after the Cowboy game!!! Popcornbeer
Cool project! The stain looks real good...very aged for that abandoned look. Watch out for the "revenewers!" Smile
Yep, the staining looks real good. I need to find a friend like you to populate my layout with structures like you do for AG. Thumbsup
Thanks for the comments, always good to hear from the Rastas of THE Gauge Thumbsup While I was watching the 'Boys thump Houston (sorry Gary), I managed to age the walls a bit more with wire brush and knife. Tried to fray the edges of the boards to show wear and tear and the brush blended in the stain a little more. I also cut in some holes which will eventually show the framing underneath. Pictures don't do it justice, I think it has come out pretty good so far....

Next up......frame the walls and start assembly.....
Now it is really looking old and decrepit. But how about some loose boards too?

Yeh, the Texans got their butts whupped. Oh well, so much for a 16 and 0 season. :?
The walls are one piece out of the box. If they were individual slats, I could do the loose board thing.
Got the studs installed over the holes in the walls. In the pic below, the inside of wall is shown on the gabled wall to the left and the center square wall. The outside view exposing the studs is shown on the second and last walls.

Next I'll tackle distressing the too-perfect window/door frames and get them painted and installed.....I hate windows Wallbang

Luckily, you won't have to glaze them. I am sure the LPKs have taken care of any "glass" that might have been there. Wink Big Grin

Plus you should probably just board up the ground level windows and doors. I am sure when the original owners left, they intended to come back...

... unless, of course, when the left, they did so in the company of the "Rev'nuers!" In which case ... :?
More progress today, I'm trying to use Gary's "speed modeling" as an inspiration Big Grin

Walls are complete, window/door frames in and various degrees of broken glass glazed and in place. I still hate windows. I tried to take the brand new frames and make them old with various colors of paint - started out by scratching them up a bit with sandpaper, then sprayed bombed them primer gray, lightly sprayed them with grimy black, then took an old worn out stiff brush and daubed (dobbed?) some Polly roof brown, and lastly hit it with dullcote. I'm not much of a painter.....did I mention I hate windows??? Shoot

This kit is actually 2 small cabins that are mated together. I made a mistake and ended up with both doors on the front, makes it kind of hard for the 'shiners to escape when the Revenuers show up Eek ! Don't know if I'll fix it or not....Did I mention I hate doors?? 35

Check out the pics so far, criticism needed and welcomed......

Next up: roofs and porches.......
I leave the doors where they are ... they look good there ... and even though they concocted stuff that might propel a rocket, those guys weren't anything even close to rocket scientists!
I was just looking at this build just now and thinking, "Ya know...Halloween is just around the corner." Icon_twisted

Love the "speedy method"! And all the weathering technique is paying off. This thing looks old!
Since the house is abandoned, you might simulate a back door with a bunch of random sized boards "covering" door shaped space on the back wall...

Andrew
As it turns out, I am going to have to do something with the back door so the back porch has a reason to be. I like Andrew's idea of faking an old door by boarding up where one would be. I will also be boarding up some of the other windows, etc, so it will look good...thanks Andrew!

More progress today, got the floor joists and floor completed and started on the roofing. The roof is pretty meticulous cutting the holes in the card, putting joists in the holes and then shingling around them. Wallbang On the second attempt, I think I will just shingle over all the holes, cut out the shingles and THEN put the joists in....

Dr. Wayne, need you advice on how you colored your peel n' stick shingles on you little shanty project, I liked the way they turned out..... :?:

More later as I finish the roof and then tackle the porches.....unfortunately, work progress will slow down as I have to go back to work tomorrow ....going to go film the inside of a flooded ICBM Missle Silo in West Texas for a FOX Cold War documentary.....
