For those unaware, a Stiesel is a mythical combination of a steam and diesel locomotive. These whimsical concoctions are built by modelers for the purpose of pulling special trains during club open houses. Turns out, there is a prototype for them. Check it out:

Hmmm...fortunately, Emmett Brown has found a far better solution for the Pandorum RailRoad. 8-)

Nothing new under the sun...and diesels are marely a waystep, not the final technological answer.
