Hey all. I was recently given a box with 100 Con-Cor double stack cars. I have about 30 containers that i can put on these cars. Ive found, however that when I run these double stacks behind a locomotive, they tend to wobble and eventually tip over. Obviously the containers make these trains too top heavy. Also, if i place the hollow containers, the ones that do not weigh anything, the train still tips over. Does anyone know how to fix this issue? Im not running the trains at a fast speed nor are my tracks sharply curved.
I'm not familiar with these N scale stack cars, but my first question would be are the wells (car body's) metal or plastic? If they are metal I would think that would be enough weight to keep the cars on the track and not give you that wobble effect. If they are plastic, then my only suggestion would be to get or modify some containers with added weight in them to rest in the well (bottom container). Also have you checked the trucks to make sure that the wheels/axles run true and aren't causing the wobble?

Thank you for the reply. The bodies are plastic. I do love those Walthers metal stack cars 8-) . These are actually very light. I have checked the trucks and made sure they were set and ran well. The containers I own have opening roofs. I can probably add weight like you said. Do you know how much weight one should add?
Not sure how much weight you should add, but if you check the NMRA web site, it should give you "recommended" weights for N scale rolling stock. Hopefully, placing weighted containers in your cars will cure the problem. I'm assuming that when you run the cars empty, there is no problem.

By the way, having 100 cars given to you is quite a score!
Correct. when the cars are empty, they run fine. Yes, i was happy when I received them. I have TONS of locomotives but very little rolling stock. I mean, i have like 150 locomotives and like 30 pieces of rolling stock. This evens it out a little bit.
Gee! 150 locomotives! I currently have about 10 HO locomotives and thought that was way too many considering I'll only be using 1 locomotive at a time on the layout and some of them are in the "why did I buy that?" category. Have right at 100 pieces of HO rolling stock at this point, which should give me more than enough equipment so that the same cars won't reappear on the layout but about every 5th operating session or so...
NMRA weight Recommended Practice is 1/2 oz + .15 oz per inch of car length for N scale.

Yeah, 150 is a lot. I will probably be selling about 60% of them soon though. I do have too many and I never get to run them all. I have very limited space and they are just sitting there doing nothing. Icon_lol
