Hello,

today, I like to show you some of my custom rolling stock for my N-scale Southern branch.

Some time ago, I rebuild a Concor sidebay caboose into a Southern "yellow belly" by covering some windows, removing the roof walk and reshaping the bay windows. I also added MTL trucks and couplers. There's no real prototype caboose, but she looks close enough for me. The road number is my birthday by the way. In a few days, I'll get another Concor caboose to make a second one in all red. If you like, I'll show you some photos of the new caboose in progress in this thread.

Yesterday I finished a quick bash by relettering an C&EI gondola for Southern. I over painted the road numbers and C&EI tags with brown paint and added new letters from a Microscale decal set. Car data related lettering was not replaced. I'll also repaint the cover in a matching color to the body, but most time, I'll run this car open style.

There are some other custom models planned or in progress.
The second sidebay caboose was announced above and I'll also create a Graham County RR caboose and rebuild my 3-truck Shay to match a Graham County RR prototype. The Shay was kitbashed from Atlas-Shays some years ago. You can read about this bash here - <!-- m --><a class="postlink" href="http://www.gerds-modellbahn.de/WSLC/Shay_12/Anleitung/Main.htm">http://www.gerds-modellbahn.de/WSLC/Sha ... g/Main.htm</a><!-- m -->

I also like to build some Southern pulpwood cars from old boxcars, just like the real Southern has done it in the 1950th.

If you like, I'll report the progress on them too in this thread.

Cheers, Gerd
Lookin' good Gerd. Welcome to The Gauge!
Nice job on the Southern caboose.. Thumbsup
Nice work, I like the gon!

And welcome to Big Blue!
Good morning,

yesterday, I made some progress on the GCRR-Caboose. It's a Microtrains 34' wood side caboose, repainted to match GCRR prototype caboose. The GC original owned some old Southern cupola caboose. The MTL will not represent this prototype exactly, but will look very familiar. Decals are still missing as I didn't order them yet. They will follow during the next weeks.

The yellow turns out a little bit to bright in this photo. I think I'll blend it during the weathering. The bleached caboose red will give a goob basis to do a nice worn out weathering.

Hello,

I did some progress. First, I repainted my Southern "Crescent Limited" coach in pullman green. I ordered decals together with the GCRR decals and other stuff. I'll finish the car during the next days when the MT-trucks have arrived too.

Next I spend some time on my Shay, repainting her to become a GCRR engine. I converted her from oil to coal burner and changed some details.
The paint scheme will represent the last years of operation in the early 70th. I'll add some more weathering when the lettering is done. Decals are already ordered.

At last, I recieved an Atlas RS3 and installed a DCC decoder.

Next cars to be build are two pulpwood cars. So stay tuned ;-)

Cheers, Gerd
Rolling stock looks great..The southern caboose and gon are first rate!...Jerry
Good morning,

finally I got the ordered decals to finish some of my rolling stock. The coach lettering is a little bit to light, but will give a worn out look after weathering.

The GCRR-Caboose was also decaled. I've to hide the white trim of the clear lacquer. It seams that the stuff isn't good anymore :-(

At least, I bougth an CSX Seico bulkhead made by Walthers, removed the CSX-tags and road# and placed new Southern decals instead.

Now I'll go to my workshop and will finish the GCRR-Shay next.
I guess it's time to start some layout work, to let those little stuff running

Cheers, Gerd
Looks very nice. I'm going to have to look into getting some nice equipment like that. lol Lots of nice NS RTR Equipment.
Well, here's the Shay with decals and I added some more details.

Now there are only 2 pulpwood cars and one caboose left to by build. Maybe I can make some progress on them during the next weeks.

Cheers, Gerd
The paint job and lettering is a step forward for your shay. Very nice. The line work was common for Lima Shays:

The second link is to a photo of the shay in downtown Lima.

Well, here's the last update for now on this thread.

I just finished the last 3 custom models for my collection.

First, the second caboose. I choose a retro design with rivets and more windows. So the style is totally different to the other caboose I have.

Next I made 2 Soutern pulpwood cars from Atlas boxcars, nearly the same way as the Southern build those cars in the 1950th.
I cut the boxcar shell down to the frame and let the end sections in place. Some styrene was used to close the end sections and to form the new floor.

Hello,

last weekend, I finished my heavyweight coaches in the final version. I researched for prototype pictures online and found some good examples, how such cars could look like in branch line service. So here are pictures of the coach and a Pullman car. There's also a picture of the original out-of-the-box model.

I also redecaled another CSTX bulkhead for the Southern.
