Here are some dumpsters I made this morning to populate the industrial areas on the layout. I put a gray wash on them so the details would show up in the photo, I'll paint them up later. Will make a bunch more, time for mass production.

Great to see your Texas dumpsters after I build some Vernon dumpsters last year Thumbsup I like the tops and the ribs at the sides. Nice details.
Thank you Sir. Here are some photos of some Texas dumpsters and others:

Gary, Sorry to hear you were down in the dumps...............ters. Icon_lol Icon_lol
Nicely done !!! maybe one of the open ones could be a "mini ecosystem" as in perhaps a Racoon perched on the edge of the opening, "feasting".
Dumpsters, as a detail addition, definitely dates the era as more modern.
Great idea, S-two-fiddy! A raccoon or a cat maybe?
Was just wondering what sort of mini-project I could work on tonight and tomorrow and I think you've solved the problem! Very nice! Be a lot more interesting then painting the wheels on my cars! Now where did I put all that scrap styrene?
I bet some people thought you were weird for taking photos of dumpsters!
Those are terrific Gary! Nice trashy modeling! Smile
Ralph
You made those in one morning? Damn! Great work Thumbsup and they already look better than the ones Walthers is currently peddling for over $25
Wow... those are scratchbuilt?!? Very nicely done! Thumbsup

So did you get started? For dumpsters with the lids closed, I'm going to see if I can cut the shapes from wood on my table saw, then add the details.

I made a few more from styrene tonight, here is what I have in total so far:

They probably thought I was with the city and checking for permits! There is also a law that dumpsters that can be seen from the street must have view blocks or fences around them. They're probably waiting for the official response on that in the mail!
Ralph, Tom, PJ, thanks for looking and for the comments. Smile
I've grown accustomed to your abilities as a model builder ... they are extraodinary! I admire your talents.

I've come to expect that you will do field trips with the camera to document the subject matter of an upcoming model building project, and then use those photos to the utmost advantage when you sit down at the workbench. Basic research, taking some photos and at least taking a few rough dimensions of the subject matter, are both just good modelmaker practice, and I'm not at all surprized that you would do those things.

What totally amazes me is the speed at which you are able to fabricate things ... and the quality level that you are able to maintain in the process!

Bravo ...

Bavisimo!
Thaks biL. Funny thing is though, my modeling skills aren't that great in my opinion! Well, maybe I do have skill, but my impatience and laziness detract from that. I typically rush through my modeling without taking great pains to keep everything square and uniform. As an example, one of the bigger dumpsters in the photo above is so lopsided that I had to put a "cripple" under one side of it to make the top level when it is sitting on the ground. So, the quality is only of the "3 foot rule" variety and maybe even of the 4 foot rule!

As I was building that dumpster, I didn't notice it was so crooked... after I was finished, I looked at it and saw "UGH!" Still, it will work on the layout if I turn it so that the cripple is at the back of the layout, maybe even some trash and junk set out to camoflage the crookedness.

Anyway, I typically trade accuracy for speed. Sometimes my mortality is in my mind, and with 170 feet of layout shelving to put scenery and details on, and 15+ large buildings to scratchbuild, well, I better get a'crackin!

For now, I'm off to the backyard to see how cutting these from wood will work.
