Another very nice ISL! I'm amazed at how folks half-way 'round the world can research, design, and build such accurate and quality models of stateside railroading. Congratulations on a very nice layout! Thumbsup
Thank you Len, just trying....got a long ways to go and want a very real feel so now comes the tough parts...

Reinhard , sorry for the late reply...
I used a 50:50 water and white glue mixed with about 10% alcohol added... I paint the surface with a small 25mm brush and with it being so thin it self-levels straight away. Immediately after applying the glue mix I use a tea strainer and sieve on the ground material (which is all natural) in light coats that soak up the wet glue. I continue to sieve till there is no "wet soil left. I then leave this to dry overnight...

I did some tests and eventually decided that I would not re-wet the soil as it made it far too dark for my liking and I lost that natural matt finish... If you let it dry for a day or 2 before lightly dusting off the excess with a dry paint brush I found that it is so solid that one does not need to "fix" it from above, the thick (1mm) layer of white glue dilute holds just fine... Just remember to make it's viscosity enough so that it levels itself and you will have great results... and the little alcohol makes it hold really well to all the particles...

Funny giving you tips...lol...I'm normally scouring you thread for ideas... 219
One more piece of rolling stock done...loads more to go... have done no structure or scenery for a while now but have been enjoying the od session which I have not done much of!!
The layout is looking good and the weathering job is great!
Cal;

The layout just looks better all the time! I sure have a lot of catching up to do. Look's like you've reached the point where you can start building your permanent structures, so will be eagerly waiting to see photos of those! Great job!
Thanks Ed....and everyone...trying to stay motivated but very distracted with work not doing so well.... managed to finally edit a litt;e video I have been working on... Hope u like it...

Yes I do Thumbsup My old brain needed some time to figure out / remember what that unusual painted GP40 is all about, nice test if we are carefully following your postings :o
Well well well.... It has been a VERY long time since I have posted anything or done any work on my layout. The downward turn in the world economy has really hit South Africa as well as a definite culture of "slackness" that seems to be destroying businesses all over the country...mine is holding on by it's teeth but really battling to stay possitive and focussed.. God is seriously making ends meet for us though!!

So, I decide enough of the negativity, I'm going to build something in my little world...or ISL...LOL

Inland Container (Biglerville, PA Facility) has a recycling area where waste papre is loaded into box cars, and if you have a look at the plant on Bing Maps/Google Earth you will see this old "shed" style unit right along the track side....this also often doubles as the place for the Caustic Soda tanks to off load...thanks ED (FCIN)

Here is the prototype:

And here is my attempt... Please note I still intend to add the details like poles, rubbish, old containers etc. This was built up this afternoon and I am happy with how it turned out considering how out of practice I am...

Hope you enjoy the pics.... Need to try get motivated to do more on the layout but have been very focussed on work... Hope I can muster some new stuff for you guys in a few weeks!!

Please comment...if you want...

Great job Cal! As usual, your structure mockup's look better than a Walther's kit! You've done a really nice job of capturing the look of the Inland Container "lower dock" area - in fact, the entire Inland facility. Very inspiring and perhaps will get me motivated to work on my own layout some more. Haven't touched it for over three weeks now!
Everything looks great, as always.

One detail I haven't seen modeled before and really love - those rubber curtains over the doors to keep the heat in while allowing the forklift to move in and out. Excellent work!

Smile,
Stein

Stein, in Norway they might use those curtains to keep heat in, but in Southern Cali they use the curtains in refrigerated warehouses to keep the heat out!

That would also work :-)

The industries modeled could be anywhere from Florida or Southern California to Minnesota (where it gets a lot colder than in Norway in the wintertime, and a lot warmer than Norway in the summer time).

Stein
