What is the best N scale steam engine for switching under $100? Prototype and road name(s) aren't important. List price doesn't matter either if you can show me to a dealer with a closeout sale that meets the price limit. It should have great slow speed performance and working couplers on both ends (with a little bit of work, maybe). The last time I payed attention to N scale steam there was the Kato Mikado and a bunch of train set engines so I'm a little out of the loop.
The Bachmann Spectrum 2-8-0 may fit your needs its a very nice runner but,you will need to mount a MT coupler on the pilot and of course the tender. M.B Kliens has the Seaboard 2-8-0 on sale for $59.99

You may want to look over the Walthers 0-8-0 if you can find one.

As a side Bachmann upgraded their 0-6-0 but,I haven't seen one run.(shrugs)

I don't know anything about the Model Power line of steam locomotives.

Cheers

I've got one sitting on my Ntrak module, waiting for the return of the N, Gauge tour car.
It's one of the better running locos I've ever seen. It also made several turns around Tyson's Nantahala Midland, when I visited there.
I have several bachmann in my display case.as far as runners i don't like them
Cheers You've got that right.
I've been happy, er, my son has been happy with his Bachmann 0-6-0. Make sure you get the newer version.

This site has a great list with descriptions of most, if not all, N scale steamers out there. Check it out when you've got plenty of time to spare.
