Im trying to recreate ECOX box cars which were used to transport baled garbage. On the sides of the box cars they made 2 square holes for vents. I want to use these vents...http://www.walthers.com/exec/productinfo/173-353 and cut them to size. The box cars im using are the Walthers 60' Double-Door Auto Parts Box Car. My question is how would i go about making even square holes in the side of the box car to insert the brass vents?? This is what the cars look like and the vents are in the upper sides of the car.

Drill a round hole about the correct size. Then use a small square or triangle file to make the corners.

As soon as the vents come in im going to give that method a try, thanks for the tip.
You might consider NOT making the holes. Paint a black square and glue the vent over it, creating the illusion of ventilation.

I second Russ's suggestion. The only hard part will be getting the holes on target.

i thought of that but then the vents wouldnt be flush with the side of the car and i know that would bother me to no end. ill post the outcome so if i mess up you can say "i told you so" 357
I just got one of the boxcars done, i thought they would come out a little better but the brass parts bent easily so the next ones i just have to be more patient. Hopefully when i paint it it will look better
