Well, I have a tax refund burning a hole in my pocket... and a 2' x 12' unfinished section of my layout, so i decided to go nuts and have pre-ordered ALL the buildings in the Walthers Ashland Steel series!!!

<!-- m --><a class="postlink" href="http://www.walthers.com/exec/page/steel_f">http://www.walthers.com/exec/page/steel_f</a><!-- m -->

The series includes a blast furnace, rolling mill, coke oven, blower engine house and Hulett unloader. There are also 3-packs of slag cars, bottle cars, and ore cars.

I have always loved the blast furnace, but because there was never a steel mill in the area I'm modelling (Toronto circa 1956), I thought it would be wrong for my layout. But then I got to thinking -- there's nothing totally accurate on my layout anyway. I'm playing fast and loose with the locations of things, the configuration of the yard, and so on. So why deprive myself of a potentially awesome scene? Why not let that section represent Stelco in Hamilton?

Another thing is that layout progress has been stalled for months now, and I think this is just the sort of exciting project to inspire me to start working on it again. And now I'm really glad that I never finished the track laying in that section - maybe this is why!!!

cheers
Val

Val that is too cool!! You are very lucky 2285_

I wish i could pre-order my steel mill buildings right now as well, only i need about $1500 for mine, yes im going all out and would like pretty much 2 of each of the new kits (blast furnaces, rolling mills, blast house w/piping, coke oven &quencher slag cars, hot metal bottle cars, coke cars, and at least one hullet unloader), plus coal cars, ore cars, coal mine, barges for both the coal mine area and near the blast furnace, coke retort, bridge crane, empire gas works and gas storage tanks lol, ohh and did i mention 2-3 ore docks? LOL

I dont know when i would have a place and chance to set up a steel mill layout with my plans for the M&ET but there something i would just like to own for future modeling plans in the steel industry. Im hoping that Walthers keeps these kits around for a while, at least a year or 2 so that i can have a chance to buy them all lol

Cant wait to see your steel mill come together, congrats on the pre-orders of the kits Thumbsup Thumbsup Misngth
Oh wow Val, you are going to be one busy lady with all that. Yes please post progress pictures as you go. I have always loved your work. 2285_

By the way, great web site. and your avatar is great. I took a photo almost identical to it in 1979 in Toronto. Are the cars still running?

Hey Trucklover, that sounds awesome, it's so cool to have realisticly sized buildings. I'd like to have 2 blast furnaces, and a row of 5 Huletts, but there's no way I have room for that, so I'll pretty much use background photos for the other blast furnace.

That's right. He actually took me on a tour of Stelco (exterior only) last year. I'll be bugging him for sure!!!

Sadly, those old PCCs are no longer running. We still have streetcars in Toronto, but all they're all CLRVs now. You should post that photo - I'd love to see it!!!

cheers
Val
I am curiously awaiting your progress here. Smile Does anyone know if walthers makes any of the steel mill components in n-scale?

As per your request, The only thing is it isn't anything like your picture except it was done at night. (hand held too). Here is the only other one that I took of the street cars too.

Me too!

Val, I posted a link to a new on line model railroad magazine in the upper birth. There is an extensive article on the steel industry in the first issue out now.

Yes kevin they do, i tried to get my wife to buy the rolling mill and the blast furnace yesterday but she got the machine shop insted
Val,
Reading the list, and trying to envision what all that will look like................

That's a whole nuther layout!!!! Eek

If I try real hard, I might be able to get HMS Surprise fully rigged by the time you're done with the steel mill complex........on the other hand, Nope you'll be done long before I get that ship rigged.
I will try to be patient, may it all go well.
