I dug out this old bridge to use on my new layout and I wondered if everyone has already seen this method of making heavy rust . I learned it from someone else a few years ago , so will pass it along .

This method is NOT good for small areas or details ....I used it a lot on my old steel mill .

To get crusted rust like on the above girder bridge :

1. Spray the bridge with flat black Krylon or some suitable OIL BASED paint .

2. Quickly , before the paint dries , mist on ordinary tap water .....the water will bead up

3. Before any of this dries , spray on Krylon Oxide red paint ( oil based )

4. Walk away for about 3 hours and don't touch a thing .

....I know , I know , oil based paint and water don't mix ! Precisely ! The oxide red will dry on the water beads giving the above effect .

Mike , you can try doing it blindfolded and left handed if you need more action 357

I would definitely give this a try when I (eventually) build my float bridge
Brilliant!
That is a great idea! This will make weathering the steel mill structures 10 times easier! lol Thanks for passing the tip along Misngth
