looking good. Cheers
They do look good!
Might want to try Spitfires(Vals) sight. I think she had signs that you could download and use. Plus they were from the 1950's, so'd they would be perfect.
I forgot what the link was, but I'm sure someone may still have it handy.
Thanks Steve, Ed. Ed, I'm pretty sure Val has a link to her site in her sig, so there should be no problem finding those signs.

I did some work on the stairs and am attaching some pics. I have painted teh stairs after some rework, and have installed handrails on the step portion, still need to do the landings. I extended the wall but hate the way it looks so have decided to put a small wood structure between the steps and bldg, for storage. It will just be a front wall with a door and a tarpaper roof. I think it wll add visual interest. The second pic shows I still have some fitting to do. But I think it will work fine.

jglfan Wrote:Heh, the stairs are actually for getting from the upper platform to the lower one. I'm thinking of moving them to the right a bit so the landing in the middle can give access to the road level in between. If I do, I'll have to continue that concrete retaining wall, as it doesn't quite reach the bldg. Obviously I also have some railing work to do. A trucker can then use them to get to the back of his truck.

:oops: :oops: It did look like the stairs were "for the building" :oops:
Moved a bit to the right, makes their use... obvious. Wink Smile
That looks really good. Thumbsup
Thanks Tetters. I finished the railings and started the small structure for between the stairs and the block structure. Now I'm gonna wait awhile to see if the proposed color grows on me.

I like that idea. Looking at it, I got the sense though that it could be something like a fire escape door from the basement area of the building. You could put a sign on the door, "Do Not Block" or something of the sort. I do love the mix of different mediums there, the concrete stairs, the brick electrical room(?) and the red siding. Big Grin
This is really coming along nicely, Gary, but one thing that I would add would be some chain link fencing along the platform and at the upper landing of the stairs. This would prevent any unauthorised access to the roof areas and, therefore, to the transformers.

Wayne
Thanks again Tetters, and that is a neat idea, an emergency exit. I had only thought of it as some kind of storage.

Wayne, the fence is a great idea, thanks. I have enough material left over from the kit I used for the lower platform.
I built a guard rail and a timber wall for the parking lot and yard access road. I figure the steel guard rail is brand new, put in place after a tired driver ran off the road. The timber wall has been around awhile, it is painted white on the end facing oncoming traffic but not visable from these three angles.

And, I built the fence Wayne suggested. I've yet to add barbed wire to the tops.

Unfortunately I had to remove the signs from my site. Several people (not from here - not even model RR'ers) were "hotlinking" and using up my bandwidth. Instead of getting into it with them, I just deleted the images from my site.

I still have the jpgs though, so Gary, if you need them, let me know.

BTW - that is looking GREAT!

cheers
Val
Hi Val, thanks, I'm ok for now but will certainly get in touch when I need signs! To bad about the idiots causing you to remove them from your site. The book of signs I have has over 100 pages of signs for various industrial use, plus several pages of traffic related signs, but they are correct for 1985. Many are usable for the 1950's, many aren't. I'm not sure about the industrial ones, but can certainly omit ones with the circle with a line thru it as too modern. Some page headers:
Exit signs
Fire prevention
Chemical and gas
DOT and hazardous materials
Electrical hazards
Safety
Machine and conveyor
No smoking
Parking and traffic
Railroad signs
Danger signs

Here are a couple scans, reduced to fit here

Another update. Except for some signs, switchstands, and roof details for the corp bldg., the area is essentially complete. Here is a photo.

[attachment=3022]

I built another set of stairs, steel this time, to get from the tower to the lower level. The boxcar converted to storage is one I've had for many years.

Another angle of the substation scene. You can see new ties in place, more on them next post.

[attachment=3020]
Early on in the building of the freight yard, I was sure I would not have clearance for the switch machines underneath some turnouts, bue to the backdrop and helix below. So I used top mounted machines, and planned on an annex to the corp headquarters bldg to conceal them. Here is a pic from before I removed the machines and replaced them with torti mounted below. You can see some ties ending at the microswitch, the plan was to have a roll up door in the wall there so it appeared teh track went into the bldg., for some unknown purpose.

[attachment=3025]

Here you see the machines have been removed and replaced. The linkages to attach teh torti to the previously existing throw wire are telescoping rectangular brass tubing. The larger tube is epoxied in the slot providing a stable environment for the inner sliding tube.

[attachment=3024]

This shot shows I scrapped up the old ties and have laid new ones, which represent a lead to an industrial park off layout. I will be able to spot 4 cars here, fiddling on and off the layout. You can see I covered the throws with styrene, to keep them clean and free of future ballast. To compensate for the thickness of the styrene, I will use profile ties on top of the styrene, it looks like the heights then match closely. I will sand the tie tops of course to make them even. When this is done, the scene will be complete and I can move on to the diesel servicing area.
