The Big Blue 2013 Get Off Your Duff Challenge

All right, it’s been a whole year since we had a “get something done” challenge. I’ve been talking about getting off my big fat duff and getting a few thing finished on my layout, so this is my chance, this is your chance, this is everyone’s chance to do it during our very first, “Get off you duff” challenge. Yeah, it might sound similar to ones that we’ve had in the past, but this time we want to make it realistic, do not commit to more than you think you can actually get done. For some reason, a lot of us have eyes bigger than our stomachs and we tend to put too much on our plates, so I’ll suggesting that we take a single bite-sized project for this challenge. This could be something that we’ve started and set aside for something more important, or we have those that we truly intend to start but haven't yet for one reason or another. Most often, we have the material, kit, engine or car. All we need now is one more part or a bit more time and we’re off to the races. Well, now is your chance to get the incentive to get that project done at last.

So here's the challenge; make a commitment to get something done regarding your layout or rolling stock. Resolve to do whatever it is, in three months or less. Post your intentions and progress in a separate thread, then at the end of three months, we'll have a vote to see who came closest to getting off their duffs and doing what they said they would. Be specific, but keep it simple so that you can keep your commitment., let’s not say, “I plan to finish a 4 x 8 layout from scratch”, or, ”I’m going to build a 4000-class 4-8-8-4 Big Boy out of spare parts”. That’s too general and/or a bit ambitious. Try something simpler and more obtainable. Also note that we are allowing you to enter multiple projects, just that you must finish one before you start another one.

Remember, the intent of this challenge is to get us procrastinators off our duffs and working on something no matter how small or how simple. Pick something, do it, and pick something else if you want , and do it as well.

The Rules:

  1. You can enter any project on your railroad that you’ve either started and is less than half finished, or one that you’re ready to start but haven’t yet. This can be anything from building a structure from a kit, a kitbash, anything scratchbuilt, weathering or rebuilding a car or engine, finishing up your track work or even completing some other aspect of your layout like scenery or wiring. It could be simply cleaning up or rebuilding your workbench or a display cabinet. Just about anything goes as long as it’s related to model railroading, but you have to tell us at what level the project is at when you start and what the intent of the completed project is.
  2. If you're working on a club or friend’s layout, those projects are also acceptable.
  3. Start a thread in this forum, "Your Screen Name, 2013 Duff challenge," and describe your project in the first post. A start picture would be helpful.
  4. You can open your thread at any time before the official starting date, which gives you enough time to decide on what you want to do. You are also free to start a project at any time before the end of this challenge
  5. Tell us what you intend to do as part of your challenge and let us know what scale you are working in, if that’s appropriate As usual, provide us with lots of pictures of your progress.
  6. If, before the end of this challenge, you complete your project, you may start a new one. Try to do two or three simple projects rather than one big one. You will then be judged on your individual projects.
  7. Because we never give away anything of value away, this challenge is open to all registered members of the Big Blue Train Forum, including the staff. Let’s face it, we all need to get off our duffs after putting on all those pounds over the holidays.
  8. This challenge is all about your project, you can have help, but you must do a substantial amount of the work yourself. You or someone else can take the photos.
The challenge starts on January 21, and will run until April 22. A poll will open after that date, so that we can pick a winner.

As usual, there are no real prizes, just bragging rights and a certificate from Big Blue showing that you won one of the top three spots.

Please post any questions or comments regarding this challenge here in this thread and we will attempt to resolve any issues here before the challenge starts. Do not post your challenges here, start an individual new thread for each one you enter.
Great idea! I've got a lot of "get-off-duffing" to do! Smile
Hmm. Sounds like a "finally finish the last challenge, challenge" Icon_lol

I got something, but I'll wait until I have all the materials ready before I post up. It's a challenge because I've been meaning to replace it since day one and it will involve some hardwork. But once done it will be worth it and will hopefully transform the overall look of the layout.

Is it too late to get in on this one?
Since I am not running the road anymore, I have time to put in some work.
I see it started on the 21st of last month...

Glad to have you back Matt. Welcome I put in a start and end date, but did say that you could jump in anytime and start a project. And if you finish that one, you can start another one. Looking forward to seeing what you plan on doing.
Awesome!! Thanks Don.

Wow, here we are, the first day of March. Lots of folks making great progress on their projects and we still have seven weeks to go. Big Grin Seven weeks, that's enough time for someone that hasn't entered yet to get off their duff and start something. Welcome That's the whole intent of this challenge, to get something done that you would be normally procrastinating about until it doesn't ever get started. Confusedhock: So..... if you haven't entered yet, or have entered but haven't made any progress, it's time to get off your duff and get going. I almost said, "...and get to work", but this isn't suppose to be work, this is a hobby and hobbies should be fun. 2285_ 2285_
Just a reminder folks, we've got just a bit over one week before this challenge ends. The challenge ends on April 22, so we will call it closed sometime after I fully wake up and had my coffee the next morning. It won't matter what stage you're at, I advise you to post something in your thread on the 22nd, and we can call that the cutoff point. A lot of you have already finished, but for those of you that aren't, we will be asking everyone to vote on what they see posted by that date. The point is, if you still have a way to go, post where you are, you will still be included in the voting poll. It'll be up to the members to decide. Finishing is worth a lot, but making an effort counts as well.
Last call.... we've got just a few more days until we call this challenge over. It doesn't matter what state your project is in, whatever it is on Monday morning will be what counts. What I'm saying is that for those of you that still have a ways to go, just post something to show where you are and let the voters decide who they think did a good job on the project they chose.
We are nearing the finish line and there are a few people that haven't gotten very far on their projects. I intend to include everyone who entered this challenge, regardless of how far they got to the finish line, in our voting poll. That is, unless I hear otherwise from them. It is only fair that those who vote make the decision as to who deserves their votes and who doesn't. Several people didn't get that far with their intended projects, but at least need some recognition for making the commitment in the first place, so we need to let the voters be the judge.

If you entered this challenge, but do not want to be included in the upcoming voting poll please send me a PM before Sunday night. Remember, you still have a few days left to get more done. Goldth
If you are having another this summer , I'll be sure to enter ...gotta get off my duff !

T
We are within sight of the finish line. 24 more hours to go and we call this challenge over, so get you last up-to-date pictures in if you haven't already done so. If you don't think you'll be able to completely finish, just post what you have done to this point and we'll still include you in the voting poll. I do not want to exclude anyone that has entered unless they ask to be.
Well, today is April 22, I'm on my second cup of coffee and almost awake so I guess it's time to declare the "Get off Your Duff" challenge CLOSED. It was a good challenge for most, a few got off to a rocky start and never got back on track, and a few didn't get too far past the starting line. But, since I don't want to be the judge on who should and who should not be listed in the voting poll, I'm going to include everyone that entered. I'll let those who vote, decide who the want to vote for. I'll be opening the poll later today.

I thank all that have participated and completed one or more challenges. Good work everyone, you should be pleased and proud.
