I'm going back to the gym after about a 10 year layoff ....need to lose about 30 pounds and try to maintain good health ( for an old guy )

Music devices have changed big time since my last stint ........what do you suggest listening to while exercising ? I'd like a radio as well as the ability to download my own stuff ....I guess from music websites or whatever . What's the latest ?...( THAT I CAN UNDERSTAND !! ) Icon_lol

No I don't have a cellphone or texting device and don't want one .

Thanks , T
I do like my iPod but you'll have to learn how to use iTunes and purchase your music and download it. I'll admit that it was a bit of a challenge to me to figure it all out, but now I'm an old hand. Oh, I did manage to accidentally change the language on my iPod screen to Greek the first day I owned it and had to have a friend with an iPod come over and do her best to match screen to screen until we fond the language select option! Misngth Nope Misngth
Thanks , Ralph , do I need to worry about compatibility with Windows for what I should be looking for ? ( for downloading music )

That sounds like a barrel of laughs. 357 Need to know Greek before you can reset back to English. Nope What a predicament... :o Glad you had a way to get out of it.

As far as helping out teejay, I'm the wrong guy for that, I think I have an old Walkman-type tape player somewhere. Icon_lol
Sounds good to me , Don , I still have tapes .......no , not 8 track Eek , I'm old , not ancient . Goldth

I picked up an RCA Pearl at Walmart for starters. It has a radio as well as a music player. If I remember, and that's kind of dicey at my age, I only paid about $20. It will rip music from cd's directly to the player.

I also have a Crosby record player that will allow me to copy my old vinyl (remember those?) records to the computer.

I'm sure there are a number of mp3 players that will do what you want.

When we get the house sorted out, the trains running again, all my books read, I may start transferring all my 78s to CDs. Unless CDs are obsolete by then.

I try to skip every second technology advance; right now I think I'm skipping 6.
Just discovered an error in my previous post. It is a Crosley record player, not a Crosby.

Tom
Hi T.

Yes you can use the iPad with Windows. I do.

Gee, I remember both the Crosley car and the portable radio. I had one (the radio) when I was a teenager.

I've been looking for an A/V to USB cable to be able to digitize both music and video. I know Fry's has them for about $20, I'm just waiting until I can get by there one of these days. I have a lot of VCR and music tapes that I need to convert before the VCR and tape player both disappear like the dodo bird.

And yeah, I did have some 8 tracks a long time ago, but then again we still have a collection of 78's and 33 1/3 records and a player to play them on. Icon_lol Never got into 45's though. Nope
Wow, 78's. My parents had quite a few but let me and my friends have a good time breaking them back in the late 50's! I've been converting my 1000 plus albums to either cd or electronic files for years now, still have about 400 to go! To get to Teejay's question, I bought an iPod years ago primarily as a storage devise, prior to owning it when I went on vacation I would bring a duffle bag of cd's and a walkman with me, must have music. The iPod (second generation, a long time ago) is smaller than a pack of cigarettes, fits in my shirt pocket nicely, and currently has about 40 days worth of music on it. Now they have smaller ipods which don't use, I can't think of the correct term, I'll use hard drive. Perhaps flash memory is what they use. Anyway, the advantage being they are better suited to jostling when exercising. The disadvantage being capacity, but where my old unit is 60 gig, 4 gig is probably sufficient for work out duties. Yes, you use iTunes to load the iPod, and I also use windows and have had no problems. I also have over 1000 cd's ( I am majorly into music!) and many of them are also in the iPod now. It is very easy to load the cd into iTunes. Simply put the cd in the computers drawer while iTunes program is open and the computer will access Gracenotes, which will identify what is on the cd. You'll see the artist, album name and tracklist appear on screen and it will start loading automatically. It takes about 8 minutes to load on my system. couldn't be easier. I can't help with downloading music, I haven't done so yet. There is also an iTunes store, as well as Amazon and others I'm sure.

There are also mp3 players by several manufacturers which are competition for Apple's iPod.
Thanks for the tip .....I've looked up iTunes and saved it so I can read it more carefully later on . I didn't buy an ipod yet ....trying to gather info first . I do have a number of cd's and if I could load many of them to an ipod , that would make me a very happy camper .

T Cheers
Triva question. What was the song that the actor Robert Mitchum recorded? It sold well but didn't go gold.

Hint: It was the theme song in the movie of the same name.
I dunno , Thunder Road ?

iTunes will let you "rip" CDs into the universal MP3 format. I do that quite frequently.
