You can't even imagine how many close calls I had with a 4 car train going 10 MPH or less. Truckers on cell phones, ladies in a hurry, even a school bus a couple times.

I think it will only get worse out there , Charlie , what with all the distractions drivers now have .....more communication devices ( and less real communication ) ...... and nobody car pools anymore so folks just have to tell the world what they're doing every second of the day .

Nope Nope

They don't say what the cause of this accident was, but I agree with teejay that today's distractions are too numerous to overlook. We've even seen video of school bus drivers texting as the drive their route. How could someone possibly ignore the flashing signal lights or the ding-ding-ding of the bells unless they were otherwise distracted. It is always a shame to see innocent people become victim of things like this.
The CSX main going west from Wyoming yard in Grand Rapids to Holland averages at least one vehicle /train meet a week. This is a stretch of track less than 40 miles long. The really sad part of this is at least 10 a year are repeats between the same driver and CSX. Wallbang

One definition of STUPIDITY is to do the same thing the same way over and over and expect different results each time (ie: Homer Simpson style) .35 35

Then there's the, "gee, I thought the engineer would stop the train if he saw me on the tracks" mentality.... Yeah, he did stop, about a half-mile from the impact. Nope

And then there's plan lunacy..

"He had air brakes on his train he could have used them and stop in time!"

The same stupidity,of some people, apply to Trucks stopping also..Especially the idiots, that have to beat the trucks,to the next Traffic light, only to have to stop again, IDIOTS. Icon_lol

After nearly 30 years behind the wheel of heavy trucks" that can stop faster than a car" I am glad to get out of the truck.

Icon_twisted Icon_twisted Yeah,. . . . "he did stop". Icon_twisted after - sliding about a half-mile, after - impacting the truck !!!!. And that's not counting the distance the train slid BEFORE impact !! Icon_lol Icon_lol

The news reports always seem to blame the train ! We just recently had a train/truck collision here in the Chicago area, where a METRA train hit the trailer of a truck stopped at an intersection ! Eek Really ?????
There was a School Bus full of kids that was hit the same way, several year ago ! Eek Eek
Go ahead, - - - put yourself in harm's way,----- and "Harm" will have its way with you.
Always...THINK, before you ACT.
Icon_twisted Icon_twisted Maybe - There's only enough "intelligence" in the world for only HALF the Human population ! Icon_twisted

I do have one question...How many Model Railroaders have ever been responsible for a prototype vehicle/train collision ?
I strongly suspect that the answer is ZERO. Wink Big Grin Big Grin Big Grin

Only because we speed up and then jam on the brakes just before the crossing so we can watch the train. 357
Sumpter 250,
I remember that school bus, incident very well. One season,I drove a school Bus and I often wonder, what was on her mind. For one It would not have happened,If I was driving, but for some reason,if it did, I would have attempted,to try and push the cars, out of the way,if anything. To me that was plain stupidity, nothing more.

P.S. I won't be able to make that Show in Milw. Thanks for the invite.
Cheers,
