Hello,

can anybody tell me when Rock Island stopped using the legendary GP9-F7B-F7B-F7B-GP9 lashup that was mainly used on the Lafayette coal train?

I found some Pictures stating that in 1974 the traction still existed. It was used to pull other freight trains, too.
But I cannot find any information of how long the consist existed. As I model 1979 I´d like to know if it still existed then.
Please help!

Regards

I never saw that 1:1 kitbash before! Great modeling subject.

If they're still in business, they might be able to tell you. Otherwise, try the State Historical Society.
The Rock Island was abandoned in 1980, unlike other class ones that were merged, the Rock Island ceased in 1980. I am not sure of the exact day, but it was before May 15th. When we we there then everything was locked and guarded. The photo says this consist was painted blue so if the consist still existed in 1979 they would have been blue.
It shouldn't be too hard to run it down.

Rock Island closed due to bancrupcy on March 31st 1980. I model the late era right before that.
The locos (GP9 for sure) of this consist never were painted blue and white.

My guess would be that all the F units went to trade on GP38-2s in 1976 and 78.

Oh! I never thought about that!
I guess you´re right...

Thank you for the reminder!
