Hey all - I have had a long-standing project to build an RS-3M, specifically the DeWitt rebuilds that PC and CR used around upstate NY. I have the Tiger Valley castings and all the details to make the shell, but before I commit to purchasing the engine, I wanted to know if anyone has bought a sound-equipped model that could help establish if there's room for the middle of the long hood to be cut away? I'd hate to find that the speaker is mounted there, or anything else that would make this a difficult conversion. Any help is appreciated!
Mine is an older Atlas model with a SoundTraxx decoder installation. The weights had to be removed to make room for the speaker and capacitor.

Wow, you're lucky to have found the Tiger Valley Conversion kits! I've wanted to do one of these for ages.

That said, I don't see how this would be a problem. I was just looking over the Matt Snell article on these RS3Ms, and it looks like the details parts won't intrude too deeply into the interior of the body shell. Even if they do, I don't see why you couldn't sand/grind/mill out the parts until it all fit.
Actually, I happen to live 10 minutes from Tiger Valley, and know the owner pretty well. He can still make the kits and may have some on hand for both DeWitt and Altoona rebuilds. He also has been talking of making some more of the Hammerheads and the low-nose conversion types that CR, PRR, and D&H had.

Thanks for the photo - Guess I need to take the plunge and just get a model to start working on!

Do you have a phone number or address that he may be contacted at?

Just google "Tiger Valley Models". Smile
Spoke with Mr. Mack from Tiger Valley today and inquired about the Altoona/DeWitt conversion kits . He advised that he has nothing in stock at this time and would not be doing any casting till sometime in June.

If I come across any that are stashed away locally, I will put the word out to you all. Sorry he doesn't have any right now, he must have sold through the ones he had a few months back.
