Whilst waiting for the plaster to dry on the extension I've done a bit of work on some buildings for the street running section. The plan is to throw together a load of card mock ups and then place them around until I find something I'm happy with, then finish off the buildings I plan on using with brickpapers and such. All of them are made from the scratch set downloads from Nscale.net - excellent aids they are too!

Firstly, "Wooty's Bar". Astute readers might spot that the bar has no front window - this is because I plan to board it up, as if someone or something broke it in a bar room brawl! Smile

Secondly, the Sears Greenview design two story house.

Cheap and cheerful scratchbuild projects these, and have been products of a few lunch breaks with a knife and some card. Big Grin
The mock ups are great to get an impression about the overall distribution of structures on the layout. The plaster at the bayou will need some intensive sanding. It looks like you will do that out doors on the photo. I had several time the "pleasure" to do plaster sanding in my home office....
Oh absolutely, I'll certainly be going at it with some sand paper. Smile

Tonight though I've been busy tidying my layout room to allow me the space to walk around what is currently a peninsula, so I don't have to keep crawling under it to get at my chair!

It now looks like this:

That'll likely be the extent of my modeling work for the next couple of days.

More updates as the week rolls on. Smile
Daniel, there is a section with tracks and scenery at the wall in the background. Will that part be integrated into the new layout?
It most certainly will. Smile
One last (?) tweak of the track plan. For some reason I though the Abbeville rice mill had two loading spurs, but it doesn't.

As such I've removed one of them from the plan. I've also decided to remove the lower storage loop - more scenery and a simplified track plan seemed the better option. Finally, I've removed the lift out section and replaced it with a duck under. I plan to raise the layout to about 56" off the floor, so a duck under would be much simpler.

For tonight's update, here's a quick update showing progress on the Bayou board. Hopefully this will come out as well as I am picturing it in my mind. I guess we will see. Smile

Looking forward to see the black swamp waters. I loved the canoe trips with my wife into the swamps in southern GA and LA.
Thanks Faraway, I just hope I can do it justice.

Progress!

Granted, only a coat of paint, and unfinished still, but better than no progress at all. Big Grin

Plus, some new motive power and rolling stock arrived today for the layout. I had to sell all my British outline locos and stock to get the cash together for this lot, so I am now officially 100% on the "Dark Side". Smile

Enjoy the photos:

Plus some rather beautiful tank cars. Smile

Now for an action shot:

My lunch break today was spent working on the first of the bridges for the bayou board. This one based on the design of the Delcambre lift bridge:

And my effort so far.

A package arrived from the 'States on Saturday, a trade with a user on another N scale forum, containing 2 RS3's, a box car and several road vehicles.

Here is my new Rock Island RS3 a long way from home, dragging a string of refrigerated box cars past Cobb Firearms on the way to the KCS interchange yard in Natchitoches.

Last night I had a few minutes to spare, so I removed the backscene behind the scrap yard and measured up the "phase 2" extension to the right hand end of the layout.

It will be the corner board up to the first switch in the loco facility - as I want somewhere to display my non-DCC locos without causing a short, and I am going to add a 3 or 4 road fiddle yard on that end as a placeholder for the interchange yard.

I may add the track for the food processing plant shown as Creole Cuisine on the trackplan but it depends how far I get with the layout at the bayou end first as there's no point adding in that industry before I've figured out the hidden storage and the mainline/switching lead, etc.

Then I've got to get some legs built to support it!

I've also got a load of paper towels that I'm going to be soaking in water/white glue mix and using to cover the bayou board with another layer of landscaping to get it looking just right.

I may then coat that in a layer of latex caulk to seal it ready for pouring the water!
Good to see the Southern and CSX units! Thumbsup
Yeah, I am partial to that particular CSX scheme, and love anything Southern. The other RS3 I have is undecorated, and I am very tempted to paint it up in Tuxedo colours. Smile
This afternoon I've been reading up on waybill and car card systems for the layout, and I can see that there's a lot of potential traffic for my layout. So I've put together a list of car types that the various locations will need. But now what to do with this information?!
