French trains 'too wide' to fit in some stations:

Amtrak had the same problem with their Acelas sideswiping each other on curves.

As I understand it, the curves north of New York are too tight for the tilting mechanism of the Acela to be used without brushing other trains, so they have to run at reduced speed to maintain passenger comfort.
