Mr. Scoles, a notable figure in model railroading and the author of many books and articles on various aspects of the hobby, has died. The notice appeared in the latest issue of Narrow Gauge and Shortline Gazette.

RIP, Mr. Scoles.
He actually passed away May 9th but it takes awhile to make it into print. He was a true talent and will be missed by many.
Sorry to hear that. I've heard of him but,don't recollect reading any of his books or articles.
I was just reading about his layout, the Pelican Bay Railway & Navigation Co. in Model Railroad Planning. I'm sorry to hear of his passing. I'm neither an old time steam nor narrow gauge fan, but his layout was amazing.

Heavily featured in Narrow Gauge and Shortline Gazette, and Kalmbach did a number of his scenery books.

Also has a logging railway back in the day that was featured extensively in ther NG&SLG.

This is a sample of his work: <!-- m --><a class="postlink" href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=CfLmCtr79bQ">https://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=p ... fLmCtr79bQ</a><!-- m -->
