Just wondering, is there any difference between steel and brass flywheels?

It is the mass density. Brass is about 8.1 and steel 7.7. One of the reasons why brass is preferred.
In plain words: a bras flywheel stores more energy than a steel flywheel of the same dimension.
It is also easier to machine, so that saves on tooling...
However when running DCC, the flywheels are not as important as they once were.
Features like momentum, keep alive capacitors etc have largely taken over that function electronically, it' still doesn't hurt to have them (and most models still do), but technically, they're not as important anymore.
