Charlie B Wrote:Chris, please keep in mind this is your hobby, not your job. If you think of it as something you have to do it will become unpaid work and all enjoyment will be lost. Work at a hobby in your leisure time only.
Even when something about the hobby is a priority, it does not have to be done. You are the taskmaster so act accordingly. You may actually find you have more time for the hobby without putting anything else aside. Cheers

I suppose thats what frustrates me. I enjoy this hobby, I normally find it relaxing, and I gain much satisfaction from it when I get things done, especially when I can share it with others.

It feels like that relaxation and enjoyment has been denied to me. There isn't really any other relaxing or enjoyable activity that is taking its place.

Relook what's going on at your job.

I suppose so, its just very frustrating. I'm used to being pretty sharp and capable, but it feels like I'm getting dumbed down and that's a very uncomfortable sensation. The worst thing is that my current job doesn't even really tax me. In fact, its so dull that I'm seeking another job. I'm not talking "dull" as in boring work, I mean literally nothing goes on all day. I sit in this chair, and maybe if they need me, I get called on to do something. For like a week, I'll be on the phones constantly, super busy, and then for the next month and half? nothing. There has been more than one day, where I come in, and come into contact with zero people, and no one sends so much as an email. In a university.

At least the commute isn't so bad (takes me past two of my favorite hobby shops, so thats a plus I suppose). To bad I couldn't bring my models to work! I could probably get away with it too, though I know the day I bring a blue box kit to work on at my desk is the day people will catch me.

It shocks me that this part time job burns me out doing that much. I don't get it.

If my memory is correct, what are you doing with a B-47 model if you are only 25 now? In 1953-55 I helped teach instrument flying to B-47 pilots. I ran across a picture from the McConnell AFB paper of a model I had built of the flight simulator we used for instrument flying. I think I was 24 or 25 at the time. Ahhh, memories.

Yup, I have a small but perpetually unfinished RB47H kit. I do love those early jet fighters and bombers, can't get enough of those silver planes!

However, I'm probably worse with model airplanes than anything else. I pick them up, but I rarely start them, let alone actually finish one! Everytime I've ever finished a model airplane kit, it has ended up crushed due to bizarre circumstances. It has been very discouraging to say the least! I don't know why I continue to buy these kits! Indeed, the whole reason I switch to model trains is because had enough head ache and heart ache building model airplanes.

I continue to buy airplane kits though, although I rarely start them, and I haven't finished any of them in probably a little under a decade.

Aaahhh... I model airplanes as well..I have a few plastic kits sitting in the "to do" pile...One thing that's held me up is I don't know if there a paint that simulates the shiny metallic finish of fighter planes...Is there such a paint (In spray cans.).?? Sure would like to get a few done... Thumbsup

Actually YES.

Alclad II was originally meant for exactly this purpose. they sell metal paints that are directly airbrushed, that simulate almost every time of aircraft metal. Alclad Chrome looks good of Stainless Steel passenger cars, but airplanes done up with this paint look fantastic!

Some of the more reflective paints require a gloss black basecoat, but thats really only necessary for the Chrome and the prismatic colors. It can be somewhat irritating to apply because you need an absolutely clean, dust free surface (which is why I always hesitate to do an Alclad project if I can't get perfect conditions), but if it works, the results are worth it.
