In another thread titled "Steam Engines & Tenders" in this forum tetters posted a couple of pics of a Santa Fe 2-10-4 on a Pennsy turn table where they had to use extension rails for the back truck on the tender because it was too long for the table. In one of the books I picked up at the San Diego Model Railroad Museum, SANTA FE MIKADO 2-8-2 PICTORIAL, the first 2 locomotives shown in the book are ex-Pennsy "Mikes" with Belpair fireboxes. I have also seen a lot of ex-Santa Fe steam on the Pennsy in videos, but I don't remember the dates. According to the book mentioned previously, the 2 "Mikes" were acquired from the Pennsy and subsequently rebuilt in July of 1945 at Topeka. They were then retired in July of 1947. I don't know when the units were acquired by the Santa Fe or when the Santa Fe sold units to the Pennsy. I think the Santa Fe dieselised before the Pennsy, but am curious if any one knows when they sold the units to the Pennsy? My "Worley" book, IRON HORSES ON THE SANTA FE TRAIL probably has the information, but it is packed away during our house remodel.
Russ not sure but i would guess it was a WW2 power reassignment.

I'm not sure about a power reassignment. I think that would be a lending type program where the power would go back to the original owner when the leasee got done with it. Santa e did buy some 2-8-8-2's from Norfolk & Western in 1942 if I remember correctly. The saw the huge fire boxes on them and suddenly realized why their various attempts at articulated always failed to work correctly. At one time in the 1940's they thought of keeping the 2-8-8-2's, and designing other big articulated's with the larger firebox designs that worked so well on the exN&W locomotives. Then as diesels became available after war production restrictions were lifted, Santa Fe dieselised and sent the 2-8-8-2's back to the N&W. I think the only ex-Pennsy power I've seen pics of on the Santa Fe were medium sized engines and the only ex-Santa Fe power I've seen on the Pennsy were heavy power, 2-10-2's and 2-10-4's, I'm wondering if both railroads orchestrated a trade for the size power that they thought they needed at the time.
Dear Russ
According to Pennsy Power 2 the Pennsy leased a batch of 2-10-4's from the Sante Fe in the summer of 1956 to assist with coal trains from Columbus to Sandusky Ohio. I never heard of them buying any of the Sante Fe locomotives.

Thanks Charlie. I didn't know how the Pennsy-S.F. connection was made. I just knew that there were ex Santa Fe locomotives on the Pennsy and ex Pennsy locomotives used by the Santa Fe.
