I'd like to know if anybody ever tried to paint decal sheet, then seal them before applying them on a model. In such way, it could be possible to make colored stripes of any color. I can't print color decals, so it could be another avenue to explore.

I've painted clear decal paper to make "clean paint" areas for applying re-weigh and re-pack data, as shown on the car below. I simply cut the size and shape needed and apply it like any other decal. However, decal setting solution does not soften the decal as readily as one which hasn't been painted, so you may have difficulty getting the stripes to settle over raised details. Keeping the stripes fairly narrow should allow the setting solution to penetrate fully from the edges of the decal.

Okay, I see. The first time I printed decals I used Krylon Clear finish to seal them. It was thick like paint and I got the exact same result your desbribed. It should be okay, the zone I apply the decals is fairly smooth and rivet-free.

I'll test it today.

Micro-scale sells sheets of solid colour decal paper.They do have quite a few different colours to choose from and I believe white is one of them.

I have not enough stripes to do to justify buying a color I won't use ever, but for other projects like repaint and re-stenciling, that would be very nice. Thanks for the tip.

I got some time ago several of them in different color via mail order direct from Microscale. About a half of them were quite old and brittle. That is a nasty problem if you need larger patches.

I continued my test tonight and my airbrush painted decals worked perflectly fine. A little tricky to separate from the backing paper, but easy to apply. Cost: 0$ 100% custom color.
