Hi,

I'd like to know if industries located on wye were common on branchlines. I've seen it a few times on insurance maps, but was curious about operations. This is a serious problem when you want to turn a locomotive and have to move freight cars. At the same time, turning the engine can be done while performing various switching moves.

What I've seen were small oil dealers, cattle pen, loading ramps... nothing big or built. All on 1950s fire insurance maps.

Currently on the Youngstown and Southeastern railroad there is a wye with a frack sand unloading facility located on it. It is located at Signal, Ohio, about 2 miles west of Rogers, Ohio

Some Colorado railroads placed their freight terminal, fuel/coal, water and sand within their wye.

On the PRR in Columbus, Ohio there was a industrial lead that was a wye.. The industry spurs branched off the leg of the wye and the wye was roughly 4 miles in length with a half mile long tale track. We usually back in since we could switch the industries located on the left leg back into the tale track then proceed to switch the other industries. All industries was trailing point.

There were structures within the wye at Anaconda, too, midway between Cripple Creek and Victor. Only one survives to this day, but the wye is still there; however, both the wye and the structure have been covered over by the gigantic tailings pile of the gold mine that has destroyed an entire mountain.
