Apparently a tree fell, hit the train and dumped it into a nearby stream.

Saw it on the AM news.
Altamont Commuter Express, not Amtrak.
That's funny - I heard Amtrak too, and that the tree was on the tracks and the front car hit it and fell into the river. Not the tree falling into the car knocking it off.

I guess different news sources... different story???
Shouldn't expect that "snooze" reporters would know the difference between Amtrak & ACE trains! That would require them to be educated. 35

Probably the same story, but better details later on. The initial story led with the statement that the train had been "struck by a falling tree".

As far as reporters go, any passenger train in America is automatically "AMTRAK" these days. 8-)
Guess everyone is going to keep saying Amtrak & not ACE derailment.

Thats mostly true of the public in general. Many of my Commuter train models are mistaken for Amtrak or another commuter agency. It goes the other way too:

Believe it or not, this train was mistaken for a SEPTA commuter train train by multiple people at my train club's open house-
