I got this pic from another Forum . I thought what a great addition to a layout , or maybe even a stand alone diorama or mini layout !

I learned that what I thought was a box cab in the foreground , is a covered " steam dummy " , used in the 1800's so as not to scare the horses
Raymond Storey's photo.
There is a building in my original hometown in Mexico that is just like this one. I don't know if it served the same purpose, although I suspect it did as my relatives talked of street cars back in the days. It's a massive building made of granite and sits just a block away from the main square.
I hope to be able to go there this summer to visit relatives and will try to gather more info.

This picture happens to be an area of New York city ....possible near the docks .
Steam dummies ran into the 20th century -- my father remembered one crossing the Niagara River at Fort Erie.
The closest thing I know in models is Toby the Tram Engine; used for much the same purpose.

I didn't realise until very recently that the NYC had Shays, let alone as Steam Dummies.

Cheers, the Bear.
There's far more modeling information in the picture then first meets the eye.
What a depressing scene.
Makes me glad I moved from places like that to out in the middle of nowhere.
I'm with Tyson - awesome photo, but I am sure glad I was born when and where I was
I'd model this in a second, but want to live like this??...
Mike , you could make it a scene from the Great Depression ....so it would be OK to be depressing !
Probably as a paradise - since the world seems to be going to Hell in a hand-basket!
