Don - looks like a nice area to work with.

Regarding basements here - we are in the very early "contemplating" stages of either moving or remodeling. So, I went on Zillow, and just checked to see if any houses for sale anywhere in the area had basements. I think the search came up with four - all were in the Mesa area. I remember when they were building a new subdivision near where I grew up, my brother and I walked through the model homes and asked if there was a basement option. They said there was. We watched that whole neighborhood go up, and never saw one basement being excavated. My neighbor has a "basement". But really it is a "root cellar". Her house was built in the 1930s, and was the original farm house before the rest of the area was developed. I do know of an area where there are a bunch of what could be called "split level" with the first level half buried. I think that would be a great idea in this climate - would stay cool in the summer.
Thanks guys, my layout has joined the Flat Earth Society. Icon_rolleyes

Yeah Kevin, basements are rare here, unusual for anything built past the mid-1940's. Poured slabs were quicker and cheaper. I do remember going through some model homes that did have a basement option but I can't remember when or where. I know someone that has a "basement", probably a room no more than 10' x 10' in Mesa. On the other side of a house, livable spaces in attics are also hard to find here. Air handlers, ductwork, roof trusses, exhaust fans, and a lot of insulation take up any usable space. Again, I remember going through a model in North Phoenix that had a really tiny storage room, (like 5' x 5'), above the second floor, that's about all you can squeeze out around here.
I understand Cookie Gibson wants a zoning variance for a portion of that ground to build a warehouse for fluxoelum.

Nice build Don!

I hope he understands that we're talking prime town-owned real estate here. That, plus we have a really tough zoning commission. We could, uh, try, ahem, to bring them some, uh, "paperwork", (wink-wink), in a brown paper bag, that might help move things along. I'd be, uh, more than, uh, happy to act as, ahem, mediator for Cookie and, as we say here, be, uh, "the bearer of gifts".... oops, I mean, "documents" Icon_rolleyes

Thanks Mike, the road striping was touchy, but I mixed up the asphalt black and was able to set my printer to match the color close enough to make it look like the stripes were painted on. This was about my fourth attempt at paving and striping. Now I have to do some ballasting before I consider that fluxoelum warehouse offer.
Was it a Jimmy Buffet song something about paving over paradise and putting up a parking lot?

Wow, I never heard that song. I would think though if you paved over paradise, it would still be paradise, just nowhere near as pretty. And that's something to think about, how do I make that huge black area into something attractive, yet functional???? Maybe the town council could set aside some space for a park. Awesome The only commitment they have now is for the train station.

I've been working on my layout, and at this point I've only got a few engines and a few cars that I've been using to test my tracks. The rest I packed up several years ago when we were first going to move and I trashed the display case that I built because I had no idea when I was going to get back into modeling and where I'd put it when I did. So, now that I have a working layout, and some wall space near it, I decided to get out into my garage workshop and build another cabinet before it gets too hot to get anything done. My intent is to use four sheets of 24" x 48" material, 1/4", 1/2" and 3/4" MDF or plywood, one sheet of clear acrylic and a few sticks of 1" x 2" oak or pine, all available at my local Home Depot and Lowe's.

Each shelf will hold two rows of cars or engines and so I'll have room for about 200 total. I got that number using the same formula that they use to forecast the weather, so it could be off by who knows, maybe 50%. Eek  Anyway, I enjoy building be it a piece of furniture or a structure on my layout. Here's my sketch, details can change as I go, just as they do with the weather reports: Waiting

EDIT: Just a slight change, after buying the material, I thought a full door was going to be too heavy for one set of hinges, so I decided to split the door. The best time for changes is in the drawing stage.
A few weeks ago I scratchbuilt a sporting goods store. I was never pleased nor proud with the way it turned out, the more I messed with it, the worse it got. One other thing was it's size. It was big enough to house a Cabela's or a Bass Pro Shop, when I really needed was a small mom & pop store that would fit in my rural town setting. Fortunately, a bulldozer crew that was working on the nearby roads, kind of, uh, accidentally trashed the building beyond repair and I have photos to prove it. The roof came down intact and so in order to mitigate the cost of the damage, I agreed to try to reuse it. "Mitigate", my lawyer made me use that word. Awesome

So now I've got two projects, "my build while standing up", display case, and my "build while sitting down", scratchbuilt sporting goods store. Enough to keep me busy and out of trouble for a while. I really hope they turn out better than my last attempts. Waiting

Well, we are one step better than before. Not a giant step, but a noticeable change. The new store is about 2/3 the size of the first one, just about the same design, just that  the windows are rectangle, no arches, which was my, ahem, arch-enemy. Icon_lol  It fits the space better, the old one was not only done poorly in my estimation, but was larger than the city hall/police dep't across the street, and city planners would have none of that. Nope  An improvement, still not great, but as good as I can do with my old and arthritic hands and fading eyesight. Yeah, getting old sucks. Icon_cry ..............

Possible location, somewhere on Main Street...

That's definitely an improvement, Don.

That's true, but as long as it remains better than option 0 (buh-bye) we can soldier on, doing our best.

Hello Don,

great work Worship Thumbsup

And for possible location, leave enough space for the cars to reach the gas station. And thinking a tanker truck (18 wheeler?) is appearing from time to time to refill the tanks of the gas station.
