Saw a locomotive race on TV. Both engines were steam. One was from the Sudden-Pacific (a 6-2-0) driven by Bluto, the other was from the Onion-Pacific (a 4-2-0), driven by our hero, Popeye. The winner of the race got a kiss from Olive Oil as well as the state franchise (whatever that means).... It was a harrowing race, at one point, Bluto punched a hole in Popeye's boiler. Popeye was smart enough to take a tea kettle, heat it with a lump of coal and connect it to the hole, thereby building the steam back up before patching the hole. A clever maneuver, but not good enough. Bluto forced Popeye's engine to a sidetrack and get wrecked. That didn't deter Popeye, with the aid of a can of spinach, he rebuilt the engine, streamlined it and added rocket power to pull ahead and win the prize of his life, a smooch from the love of his life... Oh, and the state franchise (whatever that means). Applause

Believe me, that had more reality to it and was more satisfying than watching the news... Icon_rolleyes
Great story, Don! Thanks for passing it on. Always enjoyed the Popeye cartoons.

Oh, I didn't realize that was a cartoon. Misngth Misngth  I thought the cartoons came on at 5:00 on weekdays Icon_lol Icon_lol

There's a Popeye feature on every Saturday morning. It's only a few minutes long, but it always makes my day a bit brighter.
Popeye is good but Road Runner is still my all time favorite.
The ones that they're showing on one of the movie channels, I think TCM, are ones from the late 30's, early 40's. DirectTV dropped the Toon Channel a few years ago so we miss out on a lot of those Loony Toons cartoons.
Don, I recall that cartoon even though I haven't seen it in years since today's cartoons is hundred steps below stupid.

I agree watching the older cartoons is far better then watching news.. There will never be another Mel Blanc that did over 400 distinct character voices.
