Re: CSX Palmetto Spur - faraway - 02-08-2012 I am missing the Northumberland beaches in the background... Would you mind to tell us something about the weathering, please. It looks very good. Re: CSX Palmetto Spur - alcanman - 02-08-2012 Thanks Reinhard, I begin weathering by painting the trucks and fuel tank with Humbrol enamel Matt Dark Earth (no29) diluted 50% with white spirit ( a paint thinner/ brush cleaner) The paint is wiped off immediately using a clean cotton cloth (old T-shirt) leaving a residue of paint in all the crevices. I then apply Tamiya Weathering Master weathering powders which are similar to chalk pastels but more greasy and seem to adhere better than chalk. This is applied to the upper part of the loco along with Humbrol Matt Light Grey (no64) which is dry brushed to highlight loco details, hatch covers etc regards, Mal Re: CSX Palmetto Spur - faraway - 02-08-2012 Thank you! Re: CSX Palmetto Spur - fast car - 02-08-2012 Mal, Very nice job on the weathering on your new loco. I haven't moved into weathering of rolling stock or locos. Actually, I don't even have a locomotive diesel or otherwise. I love the photographic backgrounds that you are using for your layout. It makes entire scene come alive. Larry Re: CSX Palmetto Spur - Russ Bellinis - 02-08-2012 One advantage of modeling an old industrial area, is that just by changing out details, rolling stock, and locomotives you can move your era around quite a bit. If you make some of your buildings removable but with the same foot print (a concrete tilt up and a brick building for instance), you can interchange them to move a layout from the 1930s to the 1940s, 1950s, or any decade up to the present. On the other hand if you are modeling a brand new, modern industrial park, you are pretty much locked in to the date it was built or later. Re: CSX Palmetto Spur - alcanman - 02-14-2012 Thanks guys, Your comments are much appreciated. Big Blue continues to be a great source of inspiration, information with regard to ISLs, particularly for someone living thousands of miles away, and last but not least, the friendliness of members. regards, Mal Re: CSX Palmetto Spur - clearwater - 02-15-2012 alcanman Wrote:Thanks guys, Hi Mal, took a little time to read your report - I enjoyed it and I enjoyed the pics! great! Mal, Are you erasing your background and replacing it with photos of sky? I assume that the sky photo is brought in as a jpg file and superimposed behind the layout. Correct me if I'm wrong. Super layout. I always keep coming back to you photos. Larry Re: CSX Palmetto Spur - alcanman - 02-15-2012 Mal, Are you erasing your background and replacing it with photos of sky? Yes Larry, I'm pretty certain that's how my brother does it using Photoshop. For the pic with the beach background he used a photo of one of our local beaches here in North East England and superimposed it behind my pic of the layout. Sometimes he adds some foliage to pics to blend everything in. Mal Re: CSX Palmetto Spur - alcanman - 02-23-2012 Hi, Having recently purchased and read Lance Mindheim's excellent new book 'How to operate a Modern Era switching layout',I was inspired to produce a new video. I've learnt a lot from this book, and of course, from Big Blue, about US switching operations and thought I'd try to show what I'd learnt in the video. Hope you like it. http://youtu.be/EZXi0mlWqJE regards, Mal Re: CSX Palmetto Spur - Yngve - 02-23-2012 Nice video! I love how even such a small and simple layout can give you so much fun. |
