10/07/2011. Logansport, Pa. End of the new line north from Schenley. Now torn up and a trail.  Built to service a coal mine but the mine ran into problems and had to close making the line and the railroad useless.

The steel ties are interesting - I've certainly seen wood and concrete. I guess they're spiked into the roadbed somehow? At work in 2021 our tracks were completely rebuilt to support our rail impact tests with concrete ties, new switches, crossings and taller and beefier welded rail. The contractors installing it all were amazing to watch and made me appreciate the pure effort involved in a new install. For years we'd patched things - track was laid at the same time as the proving ground was established - 1917. Needless to say, the operators love the new rail.

Todd, the slight curve downward on the end is what holds them and the ballast is tamped and gets into the channel. According to the guys that tamped them they hold really well. I did find however that steel ties that only carried 130 trains were not able to be resold and were scrapped. I had retired before this project was started so I am just an observer.  Icon_e_biggrin

Here is a train order that I guess is for the local to work #2 track as far as MP 48 which is about 1 mile east of the Ohio-Pa State line.  The last siding on #2 at the time was the one that serviced Kenmar (Furniture) and Electrical Refractories which had made knob and tubes for the old wiring along with many other products. IN 1976 they were making the honeycomb that held the platinum for catalytic converters. Kenmar is long gone but ER Refractories is still going but no longer is served by rail. This siding was at MP 49.2 (Approx). There was one more siding on track 2 at MP 49.9 that served a lumber company, Adamson Tank Co. and A feed mill, all are gone now. We no longer have any business that is served by rail in East Palestine.

So what happens when 7023 East meets an opposing train on #2 track?

BOOM, but 7023 has rights.   Icon_e_biggrin I want my orders to say the track is clear and nothing will be on it until I report clear.  I always thought these were worded really strange.

Charlie.

I was never a real fan of the red, white and blue striped bicentennial units from say the E-L, but I really like the look of the DT&I paintjob on their 1776!

10/19/1979. Toronto, Ontario. We spent the day at a little park called Fort York which happened to be just west of the station. It was a great place and it was pure luck we found it.  MLW S-4 8181.  We were on the GO line, and saw CP as well as CN equipment with an occasional Go train to occupy out time.
