I just wanted to state for the 'record' here, that your experiences are what we are trying to root out, by developing ideas on how to make new members more welcome. I haven't fooled with my new Bachmann DCC/Sound S4 momentum CVs yet since it seems to do quite nicely with the DC sitting I use for my P2K and Atlas engines.The S4 will be used in the Tech 6 DCC mode.
I use a different setting my Athearn RTR and a completely different setting including the start voltage for my BB engines..
I will look into a ESU Loksound decoder for one of my CF7s since I like the way your SD handled..
Your settings will most likely vary for every engine, even two of the same make and same decoders, due to mechanical tolerances etc.
The biggest win you can make is to ensure all electrical contacts are clean and secure,and the mechanisms are free of dirt, blemishes and properly (not overly) lubricated.

I know you see a UP SD7 (long hood forward configuration), but it's the same mechanism and decoder by the same owner (Brian Moore) on his layout. it has very similar, if not exactly the same settings, and a custom sound file giving that lovely EMD 'whine' when decelerating etc.

Loksounds are by far the smoothest sound decoders on the market.
They require none of the fine tuning you have to do with Tsunami or QSI decoders, and will give excellent running, straight out of the box.
The UP SD7 you see in the above YouTube video has a Momentum delay in CV3 of 50, and CV4 of 30. It also has a custom speed table installed, which means that it can run with any other of my locomotives, as they all get individually programmed to run at the same speed, throughout the speed range, no matter what make of decoder is installed.

Would your local group be Southshore or Seaboard Southern (in Horley, Surrey)?
The reason for my questions is I'm the Secretary of Seaboard Southern so if there is any feedback on our group I'd be v interested.
For the benefit of everyone else we are another US modular group to the south of London and also part of the NMRA BR. Having had our old layout destoyed on an arson attack a fews years back we are rebuilding. Not quite as advanced as the Western Union boys but here a pics of part of our set up

I've attended the Seaboard Southern groups exhibitions several times and always had a good reception, not quite local enough for me to join and attend regularly sadly.
Good to hear you're rebuilding after the fire.
