Yeah - I'm already "thinking" of that.. The weathering may be an issue.. This diorama will be at the rear of the layout and 4' away from any onlookers, so i don't have to worry too much about the details.

I'm trying to design these as mine cars and a mine engine. So it's mostly dirt and coal marks, I'll be detailing, maybe a few oil marks..etc.

The engine has the base coat, I'm deciding on just how much detail i want on it..

Coming along nicely.
I have big hands...I wonder if working in G scale is easier?

LOL it's pretty much the same as smaller scales.. the part you just dropped will "run" and hide under or behind something.. The screw that needs to be loosened will not come loose until you use the largest screwdiver that will fit hehehehe

you know - all the same Smile Smile Smile

Re: N~Gauger's 2010 Spring Bash Challenge - ngauger - 03-31-2010

I crammed in a 3 hour modeling session tonight Smile Smile Here are the results:
First - the Draw Bar showing the original plastic "I" Beam and the duplicate cut down and "scored to fit between the cars

Re: N~Gauger's 2010 Spring Bash Challenge - ngauger - 03-31-2010

I figured out that the draw bar needs to pivot. Mines (and my layout) have tight cirves Big Grin Big Grin Big Grin
So, I designed a pivot out of a cotter pin and drilled holes in the ends of the bars.

Then - I attached the bars to the trucks opposit the cpuplers and then screwed everything together

Then I finished detailing the cars and put the trucks, brass handholds and finished detailing the paint on the cars

As an additional item, I built a Baldwin Electric Mine Engine to tow them Smile
Here are all of them finished.......

Re: N~Gauger's 2010 Spring Bash Challenge - ngauger - 03-31-2010

On the cars:

I placed the base coat of "red primer" and then used a spray can of flat black to dirty them up.

I used silver on the brake handles and the steps to simulate "bare metal" from use.

I then replaced the brass steps that I removed while I painted the cars.

I took "Coal Black" paint and dry-brushed it on, in different areas around the cars.

Engine:

The top of the engine is a 1 X 4 piece of wood, with 1/4" plywood sides nailed to the 1 x 4

I put some G gauge additions on the top and them I drilled a 1/2" hole and put in a wooden dowel, that I rounded the top of for the electric pole Smile
