Re: Freelance 2016-1 - faraway - 01-11-2016 I am on my way to rework the layout from urban to a modest rural scenery may be a suburb but not downtown anymore. This two green patches are the starting point. This large collection of industrial photos http://www.flickriver.com/groups/1408456@N24/pool/interesting/ got my attention (posted on RMweb some time ago). Especially the CSX switcher around Jacksonville, FL looks very interesting to me. Anyhow I will stay in the freelance track and use it for inspiration only. ![]() ![]() and a new backdrop too (with the usual unsatisfactory results... ![]() ![]() ![]() First street running is reduced and will be reduced more in the future and blank spots get a green basic cover ![]() ![]() And finally removing the road in the center of the layout. The left hand industry is at the rear side not road connected anymore and the residual paved area will become a team track. The center area is planned as green wasteland. ![]() The right hand industry (placeholder vertical red container) will utilize the paved area with immediate track access as its industry backyard. Just got a parcel full of evergreen strips from <!-- m --><a class="postlink" href="https://www.architekturbedarf.de">https://www.architekturbedarf.de</a><!-- m -->. They have a large selection and ship fast. Just in case there is no local supply or as hard to reach as my next shop downtown Stuttgart (Bastlerzentrale). Stepping one foot to the right. The wasteland expands, two more none rail served background structures are built. The ballast was done today, ground cover is planned for tomorrow and the grass will come the day after tomorrow. Working the ground is great for a retiree. 24 minutes working followed by 24 hours waiting for the glue to set ![]() ![]() Re: Freelance 2016-1 - faraway - 01-14-2016 Great weather to grow grass. Going to rework cobblestone by either thin styrene sheet on the ramp or simple paper on the ground. In both cases painted with concrete road paint. The styrene is a no brainer but the thin paper glued with white glue gets a light texture of the underlaying cobblestone when the light comes from the side. ![]() or the former cobblestone teamtrack covered with a thin layer of gravel. ![]() I ran out of plastic glue and ground cover. All the cobblestone with paper and without paper got covered by a layer of thin styrene (found some plastic glue and used white glue on the paper). Same putty, some sanding and a fresh concrete paint will result in nice smooth roads. Not sure about gravel though with heavy trucks. They would dig in and/or wheel slip. Either hard packed earth, tarmac or even better, concrete would be more suitable I think. Re: Freelance 2016-1 - faraway - 01-17-2016 Lot of static grass was applied yesterday and most of it removed this morning with the vacuum. The cone of the grass master to focus on smaller areas does not really work as expected. The mass grass application will proceed for some days in the foreground not touched so far. After that the uniform grass must be worked on with shrubs etc. to make it more realistic. I used the time to do the trees in the very background and apply a coat of asphalt/tarmac on the split team track. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Re: Freelance 2016-1 - faraway - 01-17-2016 How do you do this kind of "pavement" in 1:87 scale? The paved street in the background is "as usual" but the foreground is found very often at the prototype but not on models. I tried to do it with fine ballast but that looked like a beach and is not correct at all (ref. remark of Catweasel). I think the prototype is compacted crushed stones and over time got some small stones loose and lay on top now. ![]() Re: Freelance 2016-1 - Zomboid - 01-17-2016 I'd attempt to use sandpaper for that. But I haven't actually tried it, so that's the caveat... |
