Still not sure who they are. Big Grin

Re: West Allen Street & Thawne - danielb - 02-12-2017

There wasn't a whole lot of progress yesterday due to a somewhat complicated freight car kit I built.

Front Range Products 4-car articulated spine car with piggyback trailers. A fun little purchase I got from eBay yesterday alongside a SPSF gondola and a CNW boxcar.

And the progress on the spine car set - still needs details adding to the coupler end of the B car, and a truck adding to one of the C cars. I used Deluxe Materials liquid weight inside the two halves of each spine car to give the model some heft, and will apply more to the underside of the wheel platforms if needed. I also plan to replace the wheels with metal ones for added weight. Should see it become quite sturdy. Smile

Re: West Allen Street & Thawne - danielb - 02-12-2017

Tonight I've been working on a few detail parts, as well as giving the cobblestone embossed styrene a wash of white paint.

Firstly, I built 5 refuge areas to add to the coal trestle:

I also built a workbench, a barrel rack, and a freight cradle:

Lastly, a wooden cradle for a gondola load, which I'll use for both steel coils and stone slabs - depending on which industry the gondola is dedicated to.

Re: West Allen Street & Thawne - danielb - 02-13-2017

Final update for the night, before I head to bed. One more night shift tonight, and then I'm off for 4 days, so should see a fair bit of progress. I hope! Big Grin

First of all, I think the L&N need to sack their cleaning crews, as they've done a piss-poor job on these boxcars. Wink

Next, the coal trestle is finally finished. Just needs planting and coal/sand adding to the bins. Really proud of this one.

Some of those refuge platforms look awfully unsafe! Big Grin

The trestle is outstanding! The materials and colors blend perfect together.
Looks like the cleaning crew is made of MBAs, cost effective labor work Wink

Re: West Allen Street & Thawne - danielb - 02-13-2017

Before work this afternoon I made the effort to stick down the base layer of cobblestones in the coal yard. They are made from a sheet of Slater's O scale brick embossed styrene, spray painted with Plasticote brown paint from a rattle can, then washed with Vallejo ModelAir White Grey paint. Lots more to do here but I'm looking forward to doing it.

Re: West Allen Street & Thawne - danielb - 02-13-2017

Another quick update for today - Midland Belt Railroad woodchip hopper. Built from a Bowser kit with Microscale decals stenciled lettering applied for the railroad name and reporting marks, it was weathered with Plasticote brown paint from a rattle can, as well as Vallejo ModelAir US Desert Sand and Railmatch Oily Steel paints. Now to finish it off I just need some sawdust to apply to the molded plastic car load to better simulate wood chips.

Not much further progress beyond the woodchip hopper this morning, though there is the small matter of these... Smile

Re: West Allen Street & Thawne - danielb - 02-14-2017

I was just going through videos on YouTube of last year's Wakefield show, and lo and behold I find footage of a familiar layout... Icon_lol

Thanks to the chap who filmed it, because of his effort I now have actual concrete evidence that the layout DOES work!

Re: West Allen Street & Thawne - danielb - 02-14-2017

Well, after spending most of the day clearing out my layout room, I've now got WA&T set up and ready to go.

I think that the new extension adds a lot of interest and operating potential, and I can't wait until I've gotten the whole thing ready for a session to test it all out.

It really is coming together now!

Re: West Allen Street & Thawne - faraway - 02-14-2017

I am impressed what you built with limited resources, partly during your lunch break and split into smaller sections Applause

Re: West Allen Street & Thawne - MountainMan - 02-14-2017

Very nice work! Thumbsup

BTW: What is a "coal refuge"? :?:

Re: West Allen Street & Thawne - danielb - 02-15-2017

The refuges are basically safe places for workers on the coal trestle to stand to get out of the way as the coal hoppers are being switched into the trestle. Smile
