RE: Juneco Two stall enginehouse - Amalynn - 10-12-2024 Coming along great! RE: Juneco Two stall enginehouse - cnrglen - 10-14-2024 Thank you. I started painting the detail casting today. Mostly just the junk pieces: I painted them with a dark rust, then oversprayed with lighter rust and grimey black. I might respray with the lighter rust as they look a bit darker than I would have liked. I also started painting all the wood benches and shelves but no pictures just yet. RE: Juneco Two stall enginehouse - nachoman - 10-15-2024 That "junk" makes the kit worthwhile on its own!! This is going to look great! RE: Juneco Two stall enginehouse - Amalynn - 10-26-2024 Glen how are all those details held on there for painting? RE: Juneco Two stall enginehouse - cnrglen - 10-27-2024 The secret weapon other wise known as masking tape looped with the sticky side out. RE: Juneco Two stall enginehouse - cnrglen - 10-27-2024 Slowly driving myself crazy: Lots of detail painting requires lots of patience. RE: Juneco Two stall enginehouse - cnrglen - 11-30-2024 I've painted most of the castings and I started to experiment with Tamiya's Panel Liner in Black. I tried outlineing the tools on the wall board but it turned out staining the entire wood area. Not back but wasn't the look I was looking for. Maybe it just stains the acrylic? Then I did a bit more selective application on some other parts like the large woorbench nd the liner went into the crevases between the boards for a neat effect. I also found I could use it as a stain to age wod items like the wood barrels. RE: Juneco Two stall enginehouse - cnrglen - 12-13-2024 I detailed the interior of the enginehouse: I added the large workbench in the front of the side wall, with the wall shelves and tool racks above. I added the oxy/acetalyne torch in the back along with another workbench. There is a space on the back wall that I am reserving for an air compressor that I have coming but strangely, one wasn't included in the kit. On the back wall you can see the coal stove with some chairs around. I haven't added figures yet, but they will be coming. Beside the stove is the sink and the toilet stall (yes there's a toilet in there). On the side wall I added a shelving unit from Interaction Hobbies that I had left over from another project. I kept this side wall a bit less cluttered. Just some oil drums and some other shelving. The intructions have picture of what they did with the interior and they placed alot of the rusty junk inside and between the two tracks. That doesn't seem very real or practical in the prototype as this is a work area and you'd want in clear of debris so you could work around it. I'll be adding the junk to the outside instead. I'm waiting for a main part for the office before I detail that part. My shingles should also arrive at the same time so I'm looking forward to that. RE: Juneco Two stall enginehouse - tompm - 12-14-2024 Wow! The detailing is just plain awesome. RE: Juneco Two stall enginehouse - nachoman - 12-14-2024 Super nice! RE: Juneco Two stall enginehouse - cnrglen - 12-29-2024 Thank you. I got my shingles! My Friend Darryl at Interaction Hobbies made me up 7 sheets of his shingles. He uses these in his kits but made me these up as a favor. I drew guide lines onto the roofs. Then I carefully cut the small tabs that hold the shingle strips into the sheets until I have a decent pile. I use Scotch double sided tape to stick the shingles down. I know others use white glue but I perfer the neatness of the tape. after a couple hours the tape becomes permenet. I have other projects that I built almost 10 years ago ans the shingles are still down. Starting at the bottom of the roof I lay down a strip of tape, then start to lay down the shingles. It's a bit tedious but I moved my operation to the computer desk so I have a podcast running at the same time to keep my mind busy. This was about an hours work. I still have the other side of the main roof, the office roof and the car shed to complete. RE: Juneco Two stall enginehouse - TMo - 12-29-2024 You have very beneficent friends! I need a friend like Darryl! I guess these simulate cedar shakes? Interested in what you're going to do to finish these... Cedar is a hearty red/orange/tan with a good bit of variation on a new roof but after a few years weathers to gray. RE: Juneco Two stall enginehouse - cnrglen - 01-05-2025 Yes I really appriciate working with Darryl's products (Interaction Hobbies) I have a few other products of his being used in the finishing of the enginehouse. I'm mostly keeping the color of the shingles the way they are, I'll weather it with an airbrush later but I'm pretty happy with what it looks like. I mostly finished off the shingles today: I shingled the office roof, Clestory, and the car shop roof. The peak is a bit tricky but managable. I also finished shingling the main roof but need to do a bit more work before finishing the peak, There tuned out to be a gap in the center of the peak but some 6X6 Ho Basswood strip filled it perfectly. I'll finish the peak and then continue on RE: Juneco Two stall enginehouse - TMo - 01-06-2025 Yeah, Glen, I used to install cedar shakes as a volunteer for the Millbrook Village Historical Association. Did 3 barns and a cooper's shop. The typical way to finish a shake roof is to cut the edges clean on one side and have the other side's shakes extend above the crest and over the first side's shingles. You then run a line across at about 2 inches of exposure above the peak and cut off each shake. It'd be tough to make that work with yours, and the basswood's gonna look a whole lot better. RE: Juneco Two stall enginehouse - LiveSteamer - 03-07-2025 Glen, you are making excellent headway with this project. Great work!!!!!!! |
