OT - anyone like tomatoes? - nachoman - 05-22-2009 Fresh fro the garden - organically grown heirloom tomatoes! They look gnarly, but taste great! Re: OT - anyone like tomatoes? - Ralph - 05-22-2009 Ours don't look quite that big in Minnesota yet. Some of those are huge! Must be G scale. Nice looking tomatoes - nothing beats the taste of a fresh garden tomato in a BLT...! We are trying growing upside down tomatoes, because of the slugs and bugs Loren Re: OT - anyone like tomatoes? - Brakie - 05-24-2009 Kevin,I perfer some green ones for frying..Nothing like good fried green tomatoes and cornbread.. Years ago my wife and I use to raise "Beef Steak" tomatoes. There is nothing like fresh tomatoes or corn from the garden. Loren,The worst offenders as to be those nasty Terrapins ..They never eat a whole tomato..A bite or two off of one and then on to another.. Re: OT - anyone like tomatoes? - doctorwayne - 05-24-2009 Folks accustomed to getting fruit and vegetables from a supermarket can't possibly imagine the taste of the same item fresh from the tree or vine, especially the so-called "heritage" varieties that are no longer offered commercially because they "don't look good enough". I've been having them split due to heat. So, as soon as I see they have split, I pull them to keep the bugs out. You just cut the bad spot off and keep eating Re: OT - anyone like tomatoes? - TCWORLD - 05-24-2009 doctorwayne Wrote:Folks accustomed to getting fruit and vegetables from a supermarket can't possibly imagine the taste of the same item fresh from the tree or vine, especially the so-called "heritage" varieties that are no longer offered commercially because they "don't look good enough". Nothing beats that taste. WE grow them in the greenhouse every year Yum! I was at homebase today getting some growbags for them, and i did happen to see that they were selling some heritage varieties. Re: OT - anyone like tomatoes? - Jesso - 05-24-2009 My father-in-law grew peas in his garden, I swear those peas were some of the best candy I have every had! My neighbor brings tomatoes from her garden over and my family eats them like apples! The only place I could have a garden is on the north side of my house, so I don't think anything would grow well there. Now we all know it's hard to grow a bad tomato in Jersey, just ask the Campbell Soup Co. Growing tomatoes in the Phoenix area though has to be a real challenge. Looking at your success inspires me, I just might try it too since tomatoes are indeed my favorite fruit. Re: OT - anyone like tomatoes? - MountainMan - 05-27-2009 Wow! Drool... Re: OT - anyone like tomatoes? - Spitfire - 05-27-2009 Love the tomatoes Nachoman. I've put in 4 tomato plants this year in my newly extended garden. You guys are right, there's nothing like the taste of a fresh picked tomato that's been ripening in the sun. You can get proper tomatoes in the supermarkets anymore, they pick them too green, and as a result they have a weird, chalky texture. Can't wait til mine are ready, but they have a long way to go before that happens... cheers Val Re: OT - anyone like tomatoes? - MountainMan - 05-28-2009 Spitfire Wrote:Love the tomatoes Nachoman.
