C&O in West Virginia - up_x3985 - 06-14-2009
Hi folks!
After a long search for C&O track plan from Handley, West Virgina I have no other idea as to ask you all! Is there anybody who can provide me with steam era track plans, building sheets and other informations about Handley W.Va. I want to built a huge sectional layout with the center of operations in Handley.
A request to COHS was without a response till now!

Hello UP-X....Welcome to The Gauge...Hope you feel right at home.
Have you tried using Goggle..?? Search in Google for handley west virginia, and go to satellite view on the map. Zoom in as close as you want to get...You can almost count the ties on the tracks..!! There doesn't seem to be much going on there, with the exception of an AMTRAK station. What period are you modelling..??

Hi and thanks for welcome me!
And yes, I've tried using Google, but it was not helpfull, because I model steam era! I have also scanned the net with Google picture search for historic photos, but after hours without a result, I thought my project will drive me crazy
I own the book C&O Super Power steam Locomotives, but the pictures from Handley are also not so helpfull as I wish!

We may not have all the answers, but we do try. Classic Trains Magazine, in search of STEAM, volume II: 1954-1955, Kalmbach Publishing Company, special collectors edition, has a couple of photos of Handley, with the C&O H8.
They are primarily photos of the Allegheny, but there is a little detail in the background.
It's not much, but every little bit helps.

Interesting selection. It seems that most choose Hinton, but Handley looks like a more manageable place to model. C&O Power is an outstanding book...probably my second favorite book specific to a particular standard gauge railroad.
ICC Valuation maps are a classic source for historic track plans. I don't know who would have the C&O's maps, other than the National Archives. Being a Colorado NG fan, I'll get mine from the Colorado Railroad Museum (once I reach that point).

Thanks to all of you! I think these informations should a good start for research. Otherwise, I would be always glad to get additional informations, it's better to get more!

And these are the plan: How I wrote before, it will be a sectional layout with the center of operation in Handley W.Va. in the 1950's steam era. I have choosen Handley because it's not so big than Hinton (this was my first decission), but with an engine servicing facility and other interesting operation possibilities.
I have to types of sections: small sections with a messurement of 1 Meter length and 1/2 Meter deepand 1 Meter x 2 Meter for yard sections (sorry for metric data). Theres is no limitation for the final expansion. Of course, these huge layout can only be presented on train shows in large facilities! I do not own a convention center
The first parts of the layout will be shown to the public in the 2011 Train show of Günztal Musemsbahnverein in Ottobeuren/Bavaria.
I will keep you posted about the cosntruction progress!
