Paper backdrops - TrainNut - 06-17-2009
To those of you that have paper backdrops...
I don't recall who makes em right now but I've seen 'em at the hobby shop... they come in a square tubular box and you unroll the backdrop inside to find a nice picture. The question... when taking pictures of your layout, do these backdrops show glares, reflections, or flash highlights? I'm considering just pasting up a ready made backdrop picture as opposed to trying to paint my own but only if they are photography friendly.

I think they are printed with a matte finish rather than glossy. I suppose that they could be made to reflect light with a strong enough flash at the right angle, but they should not reflect under normal circumstances.

Busch makes a set,(2872, 2873, 2874) that when applied end to end makes a panoramic scene. They are printed on a gloss photo type paper, and do give off a glare when light is applied directly.
I very rarley use flash when taken pictures. Instead I'll fix them in my Photo chopping program.

My layout with some English paper backdrops. Note that the mounting is less than perfect. And I get a bit of glare from the lighting.

If you use back drops made with glossy photos, could you shoot the glossy back drops with dull coat to kill the shine?

the backdrops you noted in the square boxes are from Walthers and are called Instant Horizon's. They are not photo quality but appear more like watercolor prints. <!-- m --><a class="postlink" href="http://www.sceniking.com">http://www.sceniking.com</a><!-- m --> has photo backdrops on plain paper that do not produce glare.
