Loading of coil into cars? - tomustang - 07-22-2009

Besides of a rail crane is there any other way to load these coils onto coil cars? Does anyone have pictures of this process or have this modeled?

Here is one from a crane

I think they also use large forklifts at some locations. Usually the forklift would be equipped with some sort of special equipment to unload the coils. The coils weigh @ 10,000 # per coil I think. The trucks I've seen hauling coils are rated for 40,000 lb payloads and I've never seen more than 4 coils on a trailer.

Mill here has overhead cranes indoors and heavy lift vehicles outdoors for moving coils.

Thanks for reminding me about heavy forklifts Russ, I forgot all about them and the attachments they can put on Thumbsup

Is that a barge!? If so, imagine the loss if that thing got hit by on wave too tall...

Hi Tom,

Found this pic of a Fantuzzi fork lift truck. http://www.fantuzzi.co.uk/heavy_fork_lift_trucks.html

I have seen coils that have weighed in well over 20 tons, which is 40000 plus. When I would haul coils they were loaded and onloaded with overhead cranes, or with HD fork trucks with a large tube in place of the forks. As Russ pointed out, the average weight for the coils are in the 10000 to 20000 range.
