Moving around under your layout - Lester Perry - 10-05-2009

In the contest forum I mentioned having trouble getting under my layout for maintenance or what ever. Some suggestions were made and I got to thinking about it. Acreeper wouldn't work because of carpet with thick padding. Some of you know what I am talking about you can find it here viewtopic.php?f=17&t=1507&p=31061#p31061 well I have good news. Problem solved! here it is .

All I did was get a small furniture dolly put a homemade lazy Susan on it and it works

Thats cool.
Couldn't you have replaced thoes funky casters on the creeper, for something like you got there?

Re: Moving around under your layout - Lester Perry - 10-05-2009

I dont think it would have worked but this is great. I havn't used it under real conditions only tested it. The only problem was I kept sliding off as it is a smooth finish on the lazy Susan but the rubber piece you see on it fixed that.

Cool idea! I think I need one of those to work under my car... Icon_lol

My layout? I designed the legs at 48", as I am well over 72" tall. Icon_lol There hasn't been anything I can't reach by kneeling.

My layout is very accessible also because it is just very high and not deep at all, there is four foot under it. Any low stool fits nicely under it.

Cool solution though, that lazy susan dolly. Have you tried it for accessing the most remote corners yet?

My layout is very accessible also but I can no longer easily get on my knees and move around.

When(or maybe if) I get my layout built all I will need to do is remove the structures, cars and locos and flip the layout over and place it on its saw horses.Of course the top of the saw horses will be covered.

This is one of the avantages of having a portable layout.

You can buy those already made up as furniture moving dollies in various sizes.

That is what it is. All I did was add a turn table to the top to make it easy to turn around.

Look back to my original post and check the link to understand the problem I was having

Great idea, Les. I had not thought of one of those furniture dolly's when we were trying to brain storm solutions for your access problem. One thing I discovered with one I bought for moving modules & models in and out of show set ups is that the nuts holding the casters to the studs on the bottom of the dolly loosen up over time and fall off. I would recommend getting a small bottle of "Loc Tite" and take all of the nuts off, use the "Loc Tite" thread locker and re-install the nuts to keep them from loosening.

Great idea and one the professionals use too. :-) Here's a video of it in action. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oivKVjkjmgo
