That must be great for railfanning, but there must be some downsides living so close to the tracks.

None that I ever saw. Our new place is a mile north of the tracks and the trains are louder there, and you can hear them longer. At first when there was stick rail it was a little noisier, but in two days you get used to it. After the welded rail was installed it really quieted them down to the point you only heard them when they blew for the crossings.
