input needed - jim currie - 12-04-2009
built the side porch for house i'm building the first one i built i dident like so i built another now the wife says the original one looks better i think the second one looks better, any thoughts ?
the first pic is the new porch in a overview the second pic is it close up and the third is the original one.

I like the original one better, too.
If that second house were mine, I'd extend the porch the full width of that wing of the house, then put a shed-type roof over it, supported by at least four posts and enclosed by a railing supported by balusters (spindles). It should be at least four feet deep, but preferably more, to be of any practical use as a "sittin'-type" porch.
The original porch works because it allows access to the door, with room to step out of the path of the door's swing as it opens. It's primarily an entry porch, and not intended for sittin', except for, occasionally, the steps.

I like the middle one better than the bottom one.
Bigger porch looks better on a non-urban building. Room for stuff on top of porch and stuff under porch.
Supports under porch looks like they are placed at a more realistic distance, not so close together.
Handrails for steps end flush with top board/weather board/whatever you call it on railing around porch, so you don't have to lift your hand over the top board of the railing when you come up the stairs holding on to the handrail.
Just looks more natural for me. But building customs might be different in the area you model compared to what I am used to from visits to Minnesota.

I think that the narrow one is good for a utilitarian entrance, but both are modern compared with the house. From that point of view, either is good - so go with your wife's uhh... "opinion".
I agree with doctorwayne that if you're going for a "real" country porch, it would be big and wide and covered. And there would be a chair or two, and some other stuff...!
BTW, that's a really great house the porch is attached to!

Im liking the longer porch better, would look nice with a table and a couple chairs with some guys drinking some beer

thanks for the input guys you will never guess what happened, i painted both of them the off white of the house with gray flooring(memory tell's me that most porches i rember floors were painted with deck enamal in navy gray in the early 60's) any way now she likes the other one
. as for a roof here we often don't have a roof on the porch (my front one is roofless) so you can set out at night and see the stars jim
