Is this worth taking a chance? - foulrift - 03-12-2010 For some time I have been looking for a box cab diesel.I used to have one and really liked the way it ran. From what i have seen the company that made it is no longer in business. I just did a search on ebay and found a few. Two are part of an estate sale and still in the original box. The seller states that they have never been run or track tested. So far the bids are up to $25 for one and $13 for the other . My question is this-do you feel I should take a chance with these or try a train show? I have already tried a couple of train shows without any luck. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Bob Re: Is this worth taking a chance? - nachoman - 03-12-2010 Is this the MDC roundhouse boxcab? Re: Is this worth taking a chance? - viperman - 03-12-2010 These are available now, and who knows when the next time you see one at a show Re: Is this worth taking a chance? - Gary S - 03-12-2010 And if you really really want one, 25-30 dollars isn't all that much to take a chance on. And if it isn't running, it will make a good fixer-upper project. Re: Is this worth taking a chance? - foulrift - 03-12-2010 Kevin-yes indeed it is the MDC/Roundhouse version. Steve-Gary-sounds like a sound idea. Thanks again Bob Re: Is this worth taking a chance? - viperman - 03-12-2010 Keep us updated Re: Is this worth taking a chance? - nachoman - 03-12-2010 Bob, you may be interested in this site: http://home.att.net/~Berliner-ultrasonics/boxcabs.html As for the MDC boxcab - the only one I have ever tried to run was old, slow, and noisy. I think something was wrong with it, but I never got the time to tinker with it. I am not sure if MDC changed the mechanism over the years, but I do remember the thing looking pretty cool. If you can't find one at a reasonable price, perhaps you could kitbash one of your own using a small switcher chassis and a body made from caboose shells. Re: Is this worth taking a chance? - foulrift - 03-12-2010 Now that you mention it,the one I had ran slow,a feature that I didn't mind but it was noisy. I have a few days till the auction ends and I know by then if I am going to bid or not.It all depends on what the current bids are. Re: Is this worth taking a chance? - Catt - 03-13-2010 I've never seen a MDC boxcab that wasn't slow and noisey. But from what I'm told the real ones were too. Personally I would set a price I was willing to pay and go ahead and bid on the little monster. If your lucky the bidding will stop below your bid ,if not there will be more of them. Re: Is this worth taking a chance? - TrainNut - 03-18-2010 Status report???
